Quentin “Rampage” Jackson vs. Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell - UFC 71
SPOILER - SPOILER - SPOILER
After the jump, the entire fight. It wasn’t a long one. :)
1. Brilliant example of the phrase "a chess match" as it relates to MMA. Watch them closely and you can see them studying each other, probing, making minute adjustments in stance, etc. About 20 seconds before Rampage caught Liddell, I said to Donna "The first guy to drop his hands just an inch or two is going to get knocked out." It was fascinating to watch. Too bad the crowd started to boo after only a minute of it. Like it was EVER in doubt that one of the two of them would explode? Be patient, people.
2. Chuck was absolutely, 100% knocked out. His legs went stiff and he'd stopped protecting himself at all. It was a good stoppage. I'm an Iceman fan, I hate early ref stoppages and I'm saying no need to cry about it - Chuck got caught. he dropped his left hand and paid the price for it.
3. Chuck was confused and upset after the fight, and it seemed like he was protesting the stoppage. I get the feeling that when he saw the replay, he saw what we all saw. He said something to the effect of "Nothing else to say but I got caught." And that's all it was. I'm quite sure they'll meet again, and maybe he'll win that one. Or maybe Rampage is just better. Sure will be fun to find out.
4. A lot of people are talking shit about Liddell now because he lost, saying he never fought anyone, etc. Never fought anyone? What's Tito Ortiz, chopped liver? Is Randy Couture a piece of shit now? These same assholes used to be Iceman fans before he got popular outside of MMA. Now they just whine about it and pretend to be on some "anti-Iceman bandwagon" bandwagon. Piss off, idiots.
Chuck is supposed to face Wanderlei Silva next. Jesus. Why not just make him fight a lion? I'm not sure if Liddell can handle Wanderlei's whole game. Silva is a brutal Muay Thai fighter, on top of being a great jiu-jitsu guy with a very dangerous ground and pound attack. If it were just striking vs. striking, Liddell's matched well, but Wanderlei has it all. Chuck can stuff takedowns though, so maybe it won't get to the ground. Again, sure will be fun to find out.
