Atari - 30 years ago this month

I. Feel. Old.  Cool pic of the prototype for the original 2600 at that link though.

Man.  30 years of advances in gaming technology, from poking a square with a dot to jumping around looking for a burning flower to 3D hidden doors, power-ups and shooting your friends online to the Covenant Elite.  Gaming has advanced a lot, but at the core, it’s still just pokin’ at squares with other squares and pretending you’re the hero, villain or Italian plumber on the screen. :)

You are old.

BTW, yes, pot refers to kettle.

You know though, its still kind of fun to spend 10 minutes every now and then moving a little triangle around shooting at circles turning them into smaller circles.

My First computer was a Timex I ordered from Montgomery Ward that had 1k of memory.  You programmed it in Basic every time you wanted to do something, which was mostly lil memory games, or a skiing game that involved moving a man made of letters through a course made of question marks. I then upgraded this to 16k.  I think this message is at least twice that.

Still don’t have my flying car though.

Yep--I had that Atari.  My first computer was the TRS-80 (Trash 80 as it was “affectionately” called.) I also had the Commodore 64 and the Timex 1000.  I taught myself Basic and my “hard drive” was a tape cassette and player.

I remember when my high school offered it’s first computer course--jumped on that right away!  After the second day my teacher saw how far ahead I was from everybody, including him, so he told me I could do whatever I wanted---just turn in a disk (they had 5 1/4 by then) every few weeks.  So I bought magazines and learned to make simple games like the balloon or rocket that you had to land on flat spots within jaggy “mountains” (lines).  When I turned in my disks I delighted in the fact the teacher couldn’t get into them because I password protected them with hidden control characters.  *sigh* I was a geek.  Guess I kinda still am.....

Still waiting on that flying car myself....

Combat was a fantastic game. First game I ever loved.

*sighs* I had a 2600 too… and a crapton of games for it. Wow, I feel old as well.

Hell, I even had Pac-Man and E.T., the two games credited with sinking Atari. Sad, eh? ;)

not only do we have a functioning 2600, but we have paddles we bought only a few years back that were new in box (and i have to tell you, the paddles are very difficult to use when you do NOT have to overcompensate for paddleshake in kaboom! and circus atari)

i even recently went through and cataloged the games we have (sorry, friends only lj entry, so really only jim can see it ;).

For fun I bought that Atari Controller that had like 4 games in it.  What a blast.  It took me back to my friend’s house in 1981.  Had the single best game ever on it, Yar’s Revenge, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yars’_Revenge to help jog the memory.

And anyone remember Adventure?  My first computer RPG, and it still ranks as one of the best ever.  Trying to get the pieces of the keys, killing dragons, and that goddam bat that would steal what you needed (like the key, or worse, the bridge that allowed you to pass through walls) just when you needed it.  Focken Bat. I still hate it.

And anyone remember Adventure?

hells yeah i do.

hands down, it’s my favorite 2600 game.  in fact, it was the inspiration for my gaming userpic on livejournal:

Part of HW from TFA:

MOS 6537 RIOT (128 bytes of RAM,

Yeah baby!  128 BYTES of RAM!

At work I had a need to bring up some old ass hardware for… uh, something :) and one of the hosts I had (a fairly decent one actually) was a SparcStation 20.  It had a whopping 192Meg of ram in it.  Which was Big when it was new.  I laughed as I realized most video cards, cell phones, etc all have more then that now.

Totally OT…

Doesn’t the sw you’re using allow for a simple tag to not display the “Post a comment” form when you’re not logged in?  I hate it when I don’t notice that I’m not logged in, type a nice long comment.. and it gives me an error.  Yeah, I can go back, copy, login, paste.. but it’s annoying.

Hah.. When my High School started offering “Keyboarding” (which was ahead of it’s time really), I was in a similar situation.  Of course we had crappy old Apple ][e computers, but they were cool compared to doing “real” school work.  The teacher was also the football coach, so I got extra credit inputting his stats for him. :)
