ABC details final three “Lost” seasons

This is dumb.

The Emmy-winning adventure series will run for 48 more episodes over three seasons. Each season will consist of 16 episodes, which will air uninterrupted.

I don’t mind the shortened seasons at all, but they added 48 rather arbitrarily and they did this just to get more ad dollars, which is the whole god-damned purpose to anything these days it seems.  108.  That was the number.  120 episodes is meaningless.  If you can’t wrap this story up from the current point in 36 more episodes you aren’t gonna do any better with an extra 12.

What a missed opportunity for some cool factor.

While the show’s ratings have softened this season—it is averaging 15.1 million viewers to date—it is the most recorded show on TV, gaining 18% more viewers through DVR viewing. It is also a popular draw for streaming replays on ABC.com, iTunes downloads and DVDs.

Wow, with those numbers, you could safely say that Lost gets 18 million a week...that’s better than the Neilsen ratings are showing.  They really do need to revamp that system to take into account DVRs, downloads and so forth.

I was a Neilson family last week. And what a joke. See they send you these lil diary’s that are for each television in your house. I have 4 TVS (1 in the Kitchen, Bedroom, Office, and Living Room), so I got 4 diary’s. In each diary I had to put the name and age of everyone who watched that TV that week.  It was set up a bit like an organizer, with every hour listed on a grid broken up in 5 minute increments. So you wrote the name of the show on the Diagonal, and Vertically was the name of the person who watched the show. You drew a line down from their name to mark how long they watched the show. All fine and dandy. But..

I Tivo everything. Very rarely do I watch something live because I hate commercials. And with some shows, as Jim points out each week with Idol, I would rather fast forward through them than watch all the filler. The diary’s do not have anyway to compensate for that. I may have watched “My Name is Earl” on Sunday afternoon, but I have not in the diary that I watched it on Thursday at 8.

How bout a show like “Drive”? If they are depending on the Neilsons, then it was doomed. The ratings I did for last week really won’t get to them for about 3 more days. So their really a week behind. The technology, once more, has outstripped the industry.
