Look Ma!  Racism!

Several people said the ads had racist undertones because they used a figure resembling a black man with an afro to represent the deadly virus.

Even to communicate an important message, equating black people with disease and danger is highly offensive, said doctoral student Ebasa Sarka.

“It is associating black and dark with something negative, something that isn’t pleasing and something that should be fought against,” Sarka said. “I absolutely understand what it is trying to do, but, with my experience as a black man, I was offended on several levels.”

Good lord I hate idiots.  Make no mistake, Ebasa Sarka is a class A bona fide idiot.  He’s not alone, though.

Publishing the ads was irresponsible, said Roy Old Person, a doctoral student in social welfare.

“I am incensed to a level that has caused much distress over the past week,” he said in an e-mail to The Daily’s advertising department. “You all sat around a table and agreed that this was an appropriate image to display?”

Yes, you unbelievably ignorant ass, and here’s why.

The ads had good intentions and weren’t meant to portray any particular race, said Kim Louis, the HIV Trials Unit recruitment coordinator who placed the ad. Originally the Center planned to run an ad showing a blonde woman arm-wrestling the virus, but cancelled it before publication. The figure in the ads was also meant to be dark green, not black like it was printed, she said.

“They’re just figures,” she said. “It is not a black person. That was definitely not the intent, and the top of the figure is not somebody’s hair. That’s what the actual HIV virus looks like.”

Let me repeat that.

Is there anything more damaging to a cause than to have your own make you look like complete tools?  Black students at the University of Washington should find these two idiots and slap the taste out of their mouths for making a mockery of racism in America.
