Yeah, because Showgirls was a masterpiece
Verhoeven is an idiot.
Paul Verhoeven, director of the first “Basic Instinct” (which scored $353 million worldwide) as well as the widely ridiculed “Showgirls” (now regarded as something of a camp classic), attributes the genre’s demise to the current American political climate.
“Anything that is erotic has been banned in the United States,” said the Dutch native. “Look at the people at the top (of the government). We are living under a government that is constantly hammering out Christian values. And Christianity and sex have never been good friends.”
Oh blow me you idiot. Have you seen Nip/Tuck? Why do you think Cinemax is still around? It’s the shitty skin flicks, dumbass. Your movie featured an old woman no one wants to see humping anymore. get over yourself. You never could find the sexy in anything you hack.

Really. The “good idea” time for this movie expired in about 1995 or 1996.

Elizabeth Berkeley was OLD?
Verhoeven is a bizarre guy and a nut. Which is why his movies are so nuts. But I don’t remember him ever showing an old woman nobody wants to see humping in any of his movies. (He didn’t direct or to my knowledge have anything to do with BI2.)

Oh, I thought he did BI2. No way, Berkely is *hawt*...I was referring to Ms. Stone.

Nopers, BI2 was directed by the boring-assed uberhack Michael Caton-Jones, who did Doc Hollywood, Memphis Belle, The Jackal and Rob Roy.
There are very few directors I despise, and this guy is one of them. He made the first high-budget erotic thriller that was boring. Of course, he made two movies I hear were good, Scandal and This Boy’s Life, but I haven’t seen them. I dare anyone to sit through The Jackal without wanting to throw something at the screen.
Paul Verhoeven, however, is a total nut and I love him. How can you have a problem with the guy who directed Robocop, Starship Troopers, Basic Instinct and Showgirls? He’s nuts. We need more insane directors.

throw what you want at me, but I “enjoyed” both ‘The Jackal’ and ‘Memphis Belle.’

Dude, Doc Hollywood is funny stuff. It has its moments of dragging, but Michael J. Fox is always amusing as he splutters through various indignities. I’ll watch Doc Hollywood any time I see it on the movie channel.
(And while I kinda like Starship Troopers, and LOVE Robocop, I wouldn’t call them stellarly directed movies.)

Verhoeven is tremendous. Stop whatever you’re doing and watch The 4th Man. The more obvious absurd humor brings Basic Instinct into much sharper focus.
And don’t sully Verhoeven’s name by mentioning the sequel. If only Cronenberg had gotten the greenlight on it way back when…

OK, before this gets out of control...Verhoeven is a hack when it comes to *sexy*. The man doesn’t have the foggiest idea what sexy is.
He wouldn’t know erotic if it bit him in the ass. And yes, I liked Robocop too.
Dave: This boy’s life isn’t a bad film...I can’t stand the material it’s based on, it’s so much self-serving whining. I can throw a rock and hit three people who had worse childhoods.

And its also why porn is a multi-billion dollar industry.
