X-Files movie sequel, Californication

As you read this, remember, I’m the guy that has this on his wall:

I despised the last two seasons of The X-Files.  It was going off the rails in the seventh season, but the eighth and ninth were just...bad.  I mean, I didn’t even bother watching the final four episodes.  To this very day, many years after first airing, they still sit unwatched on an old, unplugged Series 1 TiVo.

Given all that, I’m probably still going to watch this.  Hope springs a kernel![/dennycrane]

Speaking of Duchovny, who is a Class One Douchebag and not the world’s finest actor, his new cable series Californication is pretty damn good.  He’s exactly the right level of douche and sincere to play the role of downwardly-spiraling Hank Moody, and having Natascha McElhone as Hank’s ex never hurts.  That woman is impossibly beautiful in some sort of strange-faced, perfect and exotic way.  She doesn’t seem real, and they use that to great effect on the show, as Hank thinks of his ex in exactly those terms; perfect, exotic and impossibly beautiful.  Good writing, decent performances all around, and they even have their very own Suicide Girl (well, Rachel Miner playing a Suicide Girl - also, link NSFW!) in a fairly prominent role.  Pretty cool show.  Download it if you don’t get Showtime.

Lastly, I think Showtime is the new HBO.  Weeds, Dexter, Californication, Penn & Teller’s Bullshit...I hear The Tudors was amazing as well.  HBO better wake the hell up now that the Sopranos cash cow is dead.

Heard that! I didn’t watch much of any of the last two seasons. I don’t have showtime, so is this role a rehash of the doctor in Playing God?

Here’s to hopin! maybe some nekkid Gillian red bush?

Yeah, X-Files went screwy after season 6. I still need to watch a lot of episodes, so I’m slowly working my way up from the beginning. Also, maybe I’m not up on celebrities, but how is Duchovny a douche? I got the impression from several bits that he was a pretty fun guy, but I could be mistaken.

In fairness, I haven’t heard about his ‘tude for the last few years, but at the end of the ‘files he was super-arrogant.  Thought he was like Brando, thought he could write better than the writers, direct better than the directors, etc.

All that aside, he’s immensely watchable and fun in Californication.  He fits this role like a glove.

Right there with ya on Xfiles. When I couldn’t even make it past the intro to the show, a show I have every single episode on Video tape, and had since episode 1, you know something is seriously wrong. I have hopes for a new movie, but I still have hopes of getting that date with Stephanie Hollingsworth from my senior year.

As for Suicide Girls, whats up with the political crap on their pages? Is it just an attempt to show how antiestablishment they are? And how bad is HBO lately? When did it become the Documentary Channel? Defianately thinking of switching to Showtime.

I like Weeds, but the writers definitely have BDS.  Doesn’t pop up frequently, but when it does, it’s inaccurate, absurd, and annoying.

By the way, I’m sure you’ll eventually blog this, and I hope you realize it’s doomed from the start.  They have Minear and FOX involved.  The only way to really jinx even more it is to add Nathan Fillion.

I don’t know if you need fillion to give it a final jinx.  You’ve already got the Dushku involvement.  Not like her success has gone well with Fox either.  Tru calling was on fox right?

I’m picturing something like a cross between “Dark Angel” and “Pretender”, but without the intellectual rigor…

I stopped watching X-Files around the fourth or fifth season. That show ran for way too long.

In the summary, you had mentioned that the last few seasons sucked… so he may have had a point. I don’t get it - why do people watch shows and then complain that they suck? There’s a simple solution - don’t watch the show. I mean, not to be a douche or anything, but is your life so empty that you have to keep watching a show after it’s clearly become a turd? I had no trouble giving up the Sopranos after Season Four…

That being said, I would agree that HBO has crashed into pretty much nothing and Showtime has the better cable series right now. HBO doesn’t even show decent movies most of the time. I’ve been liking Dexter, Bullshit!, and (sort of) Californication. I don’t think Californication has figured out what it wants to be. It started out as edgy and amusing and over the last few episodes has descended into badly-contrived, sex-free drama. I just can’t deal with bad drama unless there’s some sex or violence to keep it mildly interesting (and even that’s pushing things).

Speaking of dying series ... sadly, this season of Boston Legal has finally crossed my threshold of tolerance for liberal inanity. It needs more Denny Crane w/ mad cow and less trying to tie itself into knots trying to find a way to make sex offender registries look like t3h evil. Alan Shore’s quirks are funny when they’re getting him laid, but they’re stupid when they get him into quasi-therapy with a chick he should just be nailing in elevators. And I can’t look at John Laroquette without Night Court flashbacks. I keep waiting for Harry whats-his-nuts to walk in the door.

Jim,

No thoughts on Heroes? I’m getting a little frustrated with the setup, especially since it seemed like Hiro’s storyline was just tacked on. But with the paintings we’ve seen it now makes it seem like the storyline will be pretty important.
