Who didn’t see this coming?

Steve Irwin is dead.

Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has died in a freak marine accident while shooting a documentary on the Great Barrier Reef.

The 44-year-old is believed to have been killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest while he was diving.

He was filming an underwater documentary off Port Douglas when the accident occurred.

Mr Irwin’s body is being flown to a morgue in Cairns.

Tasmanian police have confirmed his American-born wife Terri is trekking on Cradle Mountain in Tasmania.

A spokeswoman said in a statement police had made contact with Mrs Irwin and “passed on a message relating to the death of her husband”.

Melbourne-born Mr Irwin - known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter - is famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry “Crikey!”.

I feel bad for his kids, but for fuck’s sake, it was going to happen sooner or later.  You can’t stick your face in a pit of vipers year in and year out and not get bit eventually.  So it was a stingray.  He probably tried to stick his finger up it’s ass all the while exclaiming “Look at that, oh, she don’t loike that!”

I hereby nominate Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, for the all-time top Darwin Award.

Sorry, I disagree. Yeah, he was goofy, and yeah, he took risks, sometimes really stupid ones.

But I’d still trade every terrorist-wannabe motherfucker member of PETA’s life for one more year of Steve Irwin being around.

Remember, every time a sensible conservationist who puts their money where their mouth is and gets their hands dirty in positive ways shuffles off the mortal coil, the ratio of the sort of assholes who burn down car dealerships because cars hit possums goes up.

Yeah he may have been insane but at least he actually knew his subject.

Yeah he may have been insane

He’s not… wasn’t… insane any more than professional wrestlers are insane for claiming they rose from the dead or banged each others’ moms. He played a part much like they do… one based on himself, but hammed up to the extreme.

And as to handling dangerous animals, he wasn’t really any more insane than extreme sports professionals, or race car drivers, and so on. (Though admittedly those peoples’ sanity is sometimes questionable too.)

He probably tried to stick his finger up it’s ass all the while exclaiming “Look at that, oh, she don’t loike that!”

It turns out that sticking your finger up the rectum of crocodile youth is the only quick, reliable way of determining its gender. Stingrays, not so much.

Still, the people who watched the video said that Irwin’s mistake was to be lined up with his cameraman for an instant that made it appear to the ray that it was boxed in. Figures that the animal that got him was the one he wasn’t trying to piss off at the time.

Also, to be eligible for a Darwin Award, you have to remove yourself from the gene pool, and what with him being survived by his wife and two kids, there’s no way Steve Irwin could win it on anything but a technicality.

I say insane out the most respect for him. And yes I find many extreme sports guys and some wrestlers (what some of them do to their bodies, not the gimmicks) to be insane.
