When the assemblage is smarter than the leadership

Looks like the next crop of House Democrats is a wee bit smarter than the woman who will lead them.

House Democrats elected Steny Hoyer to the No. 2 post in their caucus for the next session of Congress, handing a defeat to their own leader, Nancy Pelosi, who campaigned against him.

Hoyer beat Representative John Murtha of Pennsylvania, who is best known for calling last year for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq. Hoyer, of Maryland, is currently Democratic whip, the second-highest leadership job. The vote was 149-86.

That’s a pretty big margin of loss for someone who was backed by the next Speaker.  Looks like the Democratic caucus wasn’t interested in Abscam Jack “The Troops is killers” Murtha being in the leadership.  You think it was the fact that he said this on tape during an FBI sting that maybe sunk him?

I have it a little different. He doesn’t expect to be in leadership, I have to be more careful. That’s what it amounts to. I expect to be in the fucking leadership of the House. And you have anything said against you then you’ve got a problem. So you’ve got to be able to justify it. And I’m just avoiding having any problems, what it amounts to. And I’m delighted to do business with you. Shit I do business like this all the time to get companies into the area to get business into the area. Nobody’s quite as generous as you guys have been, but, ah, I understand it.

Oww.  That had to hurt.  Why is this low-life still a Congressman?  Do voters not care at all that he’s been corrupt for nigh on to 30 years?

Pelosi won a separate victory when Democratic lawmakers backed her uncontested bid for House speaker.

Is that a victory worth mentioning?  Is that really victory at all?  Democrats winning both houses of Congress was a victory.  Nancy becoming Speaker when she was uncontested is just the public side of whatever back-room deal put her there.

She would become the first woman to hold the speakership.

Gotta get that in there.  Lord knows where we’d be if the media didn’t point out if someone is a woman, black or gay.  Does this crap really matter that much to people in 2006?  You really care if a Congressperson is black or female or any other label other than corrupt (which, coincidentally, is something to which Pelosi can also lay claim)?  I have this sneaking suspicion that if the media didn’t mention it every five seconds, people would stop caring so much.  I suppose I should be thankful that they didn’t also mention her being a grandmother again.  Hey, did you guys know John Kerry was in Vietnam?  Yeah, that’s about as fresh as the news that Pelosi is a grandmother, who, by the way, has a vagina and breasts.  Did you know she’s the first Vaginal-American to hold this job?

Oh Gramma Pelosi!  You’ve come a long way, baby.
