The Pats
I watched my first full NFL game in years last night...it was Pats at the Bills from Sunday.
Holy crap. Screw the 9 minutes of filmed footage (CamGate!). I could not care less that the Patriots got caught pointing a camera at the other side’s coaching staff, or whatever it was. All teams have been trying to intercept other team’s signals since the earliest days of radio headsets. Calling the pats cheaters doesn’t explain why they literally cannot be stopped.
Ever.
Now, I know the Bills are shit. I say this as a man that owns a lot of Bills gear. I’ve been a (sad, pathetic) Bills fan since I was a kid...and I’m saying that I know they suck. The fact that the Pats were scoring at will on ever possession for three quarters is not explained by the Pats taping the Jets defensive coaches for 9 minutes. Kicking the shit out of everyone in the league is not explained by “cheating.” Playing at that level is simply amazing. The Patriots this year looked like the 49ers being led by Montana, or Dallas back in the “America’s Team” days, or the best of Elway leading the Broncos. The Pats defense is good, but the offense is ridiculously great. Tom Brady is being talked about as the best quarterback that has ever played the game, and if he stays on track this season, his numbers will be so good that he will top damn near ever statistical record that gets counted. Watching him is like watching a quarterbacking machine.
Cheaters? Whatever. Like I said, all teams have pulled that crap since the first radio headsets. The Patriots are simply better than everyone else right now, and I would not be shocked to see that ‘72 Dolphins season surpassed this year. 19-0? It could happen.

Actually I think the cheaters moniker has taken a backseat to poor sportsmen. You know like keeping Brady in the game the whole time, going for it on 4th down when you can kick a fieldgoal because you’re on the tail end of a blow out. They’re playing with a massive chip on their shoulders. And that could end up being their ultimate downfall. Keeping your stars in for the whole game and taking risks which you shouldn’t could lead to someone getting hurt.
Their running game is a bit suspect though. And I think I will be laughing when they make it to the playoffs and get beat in their first game.

I definitley think the whole spy-gate thing is motivating them to kick so much ass so hard, and part of me wants to say they are poor sports for running up the score. But then I think it should be up to the opposing team to not let them score 50 points and quit being babies.
I think if they can beat the Steelers they’re golden for the regular season, then the only other obstacle is the inevitable game against the Colts in the AFC champion game.
Of course it would be great to see them lose to Miami in a few weeks just to see Belichek’s head explode.

Hang on...keeping a good player in the game is poor sportsmanship? Really?
Why WOULDN’T you grind a team into the dust when you get the chance? Where is it written that you should only defeat a team rather than destroy them?
Not being American, I don’t know what the “spirit” is there, but from the point of view of Australian Rules football, the game is all about intimidation. you make the opposition know that when they get the ball they’re going to get hit. That when you get on top you’re going to beat them by as much as possible. I remember beating teams by 200 points or more when I played. There’s no such thing as winning by too much, and anyone who says there is is an idiot who obviously never played competitive sport.
What on earth is wrong with giving someone an absolute hiding?

Agreeing with Wes here. Scoring 3-4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter is not unheard of either.

Well I consider this:
On fourth-and-1 from the Buffalo 10, with 1:09 remaining in the third quarter of a game they led 42-10, the Pats blew off a field goal and threw a 3-yard pass to Moss, setting up touchdown No. 7.
Is horrible sportmanship. Its something hardly done when you’re up on a team by 2 touchdowns, let alone when you have a 32 point lead.
Hang on...keeping a good player in the game is poor sportsmanship? Really?
No, that’s taking dumb chances. I will seriously laugh when Moss or Brady get knocked out for the season because Old coach sourpuss needed to make sure that they were up 40 points going into the 4th quarter on a team with a losing record. And that’s where the poor sportmen comes into it.

Well, I think that Suresh is deserving of an asskicking for even THINKING about pulling a gun on someone…
Oh, wait, this isn’t the Heroes thread?

Since when is it the offense’s responsibility to stop scoring? That smacks of “EVERYONE’S A WINNER, HAVE A RAINBOW STICKER AND A UNICORN!”
You want the score kept down? Simple. Stop them from scoring. Madden said it during the game, nd he was right. It’s the defense’s responsibility to make something happen, and if they don’t, too fucking bad. This is the NFL, not some 7-11 year-old’s soccer league where they don’t keep score and everyone gets a trophy.

Hey I didn’t say stop scoring. But its 4th down, you’re up by 32 points, and you’re going for it? I mean its not like they’re playing the colts or the cowboys or one of the teams that could actually shut down their offense and score 5 touchdowns to come back in win.
Like I said they’re playing with a massive chip on their shoulders, and I will laugh my ass off when it bites them in the ass.

I hate the Pats. They are all smug as can be, and that rubs me wrong.
I also think Brady is as over rated as Vick was, probably more so. An alright QB he may be, but a god of the game he is not. Frankly I’m sick of hearing about him.

Going for it on 4th down when you’re so far ahead is not poor sportsmanship. Kicking a FG is about as sure a thing as you can get. Going for it gives the D continued chances to keep points off the board, cause turnovers, etc.
Further than that, in the 4th quarter they put in the immortal Kyle Eckel - The guy is a fullback from Navy. If an NFL D can’t stop him then they deserve to get blown out.
And Putzboy. Brady as overrated as Vick? There is not a fact in the world that would support that assertion. How exactly do you over rate a guy who’s won 3 Superbowls, will most likely win his 4th this year, and is on the verge of shattering every single season passing record in the books?
Oh yeah - and he bangs supermodels.
The NFL is Belichick’s sandbox and the other 31 teams are just playing in it. The question isn’t wether or not they go 19-0, but if they do it again next year. Order the rings.

I’m sorry, I didn’t catch all that with the colletive Pats cock in your mouth.
Brady is an average QB put in an excellent system. Almost anyone put in that system would look good, he gets way more credit then is due.

The whole thing is about intimidation. Everything they did was basically screaming of, “We are the best. We will grind you into dust. When we’re done beating you, we will continue to beat you down even harder. There will be nothing you can do about it. Nothing.”
This game was a message to all the other teams in the league to be afraid. When you’re afraid you play more conservatively. You’re always looking over your shoulder for what Brady’s going to do next. You are allocating resources in a way that you wouldn’t for any other team. That’s the Pats gameplan and I’ll be damned if it isn’t working.

It is like they are playing Madden on All-Pro. I mean for Christ’s sake they are scoring 41 points a game and only giving up 15 (which is second only to the Steelers). They are 1st in the league in offense and 3rd in defense. That just doesn’t happen. Typically teams are deficient in one of the areas if they are superb in the other.
