The new conservative craze: Blogging on things you know nothing about

Whenever Michelle Malkin pretends to have her finger on the pulse of youth...ignore her.  She’s completely and utterly clueless.  Her newest screw-up regarding pop culture is that Emo music is creating a new wave of cutters.  If you don’t know what emo or cutters are, please DO NOT GET YOUR INFORMATION FROM MALKIN, SHE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT THE FUCK SHE’S TALKING ABOUT.  Her knowledge on this subject is Powerpoint-deep.

I wish conservative commentators would do some research that did not end at barking into their own echo chamber when they write about these things.  It makes me wonder about the validity of the other things she writes.  If she can be so remarkably off-base about this, so undeniably wrong, what else is she wrong about?

Michelle, you need to ASK QUESTIONS, not make statements.  Emo is to cutting as rock & roll is to pre-marital sex.  Oh, wait, you probably blame Elvis for pre-marital sex, maybe that comparison is lost on you.

Cutters have been around for decades.  Longer than Malkin.  The last genre of music that attracted them was goth metal.  Not goth in general, but specifically goth metal, and more specifically Marilyn Manson.  If you are or were a fan, you know the Slashers.  Some of you may even know about Jack Off Jill’s fans and the Strawberry Gashes.

The fact that Malkin isn’t aware of this only demonstrates her utter ignorance on the matter.  And when parents spread ignorance and pretend they are doing it “for the kids,” guess who suffers, then ultimately ignores those parents?

That’s right, the kids who already know the parents are full of shit.

For the record, I ran a message forum for two years for practicioners of SI (self-injury).  It was not a pro-SI site, but rather one where the participants tried to help each other STOP the practice.  *I* know of what I speak.  My left arm is covered in tiny scars, self-inflicted when I was a teen.  Malkin is woefully unqualified to discuss this topic.

Michelle, if you want some answers, feel free to ask.  Maybe you should have done some asking before publshing such ignorance about such a serious topic.

Michele (note the spelling) at A Small Victory ain’t too happy with Malkin today either.

You know who Malkin remnds me of?  The same kind of uninformed, lazy people that wrote Reefer Madness.  No attempt at truth or understanding, just the spreading of nonsense and half-informed buzzwords to scare people and look like you care about an issue.

*UPDATE*

Don’t miss this post at A Small Victory.

Well, most people who would take something like that at face value… my parents’ generation and their parents… their view on the problems and possible hell that cutters might be going through in their emotional lives are, and I quote: “Those people are just plain SICK.” Imagine it said with a sort of growling derision bordering on hate. That’s how I imagine Malkin thinks of it.

Uhh...a whole fucking lot, in my opinion.  I think I’ve agreed with her twice in the past year.

I agree with you on this one.

Being an ex-cutter myself, her posting on it really ticked me off. It’s obvious to anyone who practiced SI or knows someone who has practiced SI that she’s completely clueless.

I’m also really sick of the whole “certain types of music cause SI” bullshit. Kids listen to emo because they’re depressed. They’re not depressed because they listen to emo.

It’s like saying someone eats food because they’re fat, not that they’re fat because they eat food.... or something. That didn’t make much sense.

Oh well…

Anyway, she’s completely clueless… to the point of almost offending me with her complete disregard for the truth about something as serious as SI.
