Thanks, PTC!
This is awesome! The Parent’s Television Council, no doubt made up of the same kinds of censor-happy hypocritical assholes as every other special interest group that tries to tell you how to live and what to think, has done something cool. They’re also the same assholes that submitted over 90% of the complaints to the FCC last year, so you get who we’re dealing with.
They made a nice little site where they violate copyright by re-airing all the dirty and offensive clips from recent TV shows. How cool is it that these idiots have collected just the parts that are worth watching for the comedy and/or shock value? That was so nice of them!
What wonders await you? Oh gee, you can see some “Explicit scenes of patently offensive sexual and excretory functions” from CSI, some “gratuitous teen sex” from Life As We Know It, a teen orgy from Without A Trace, and the whore-off from South Park. Awesome!
Gee, PTC, where would we be without you. Well, maybe a more advanced society that doesn’t waste time trying to get the government to legislate the act of parenting, but who’s counting?

The whore-off may be one of the funniest things ever.
I hope she died in his colon.

The most offensive thing about the south park clip was the end where they tried to blame nintendo for “sponsoring” the show. Maybe someone forgot to tell them that gamers are all grown up now and can do and watch what the fuck they want. idiots the world is full of idiots
why can’t libertarians run the country

I thought, according to copyright, that you were allowed to reproduce excerpts for the “purposes of critiquing.” I know you can with print media, anyway, because that’s how bloggers get away with it. Is it not that way with audio and video?

white rabbit: I don’t know, why don’t you go look up the legalities of reproducing television shows on the web and summarize it for us?

Jim, come to think of it, you might want to check on that before you accuse them of copyright infringement. As insane as some of the networks are about it, I really doubt they’d let it stand if it was violating copyright.
Don’t get me wrong… I despise the PTC and their nanny ideology. But, you know, right wing bloggers need to be ten times more careful about accuracy. We get enough crap without legit errors.

(guess you posted that as I was writing mine)
*shrug* Okay, get defensive and pissy about it if you want. I’m just saying, you might want to make sure you’re right before you go accusing someone of breaking the freaking law.

I love South Park. I also love the parental blocking feature that comes with my cable.

JimK, you’re the one making the accusations, therefore you are the one that has the burden of proof. (i.e. you’re the one who needs to show it violates copyright, not WR)

I think with music you are allowed to use short snippets (a few seconds) without a problem. Perhaps as long as they do not use more than a certain amount of footage its okay?
As for the critics, I don’t think that has anything to do with copyright law -as I understand it, the footage is usually provided by the studio, and only that footage may be used.
As for the scenes themselves, I admit South Park was over the top, even by their standards, and the adult baby scene was not a place I wanted to go. The rest that I saw (which wasn’t all of it) seemed okay, in that most kids, if they are not already sexually aware, won’t catch on completely. However, it also seems to me that most of these things are adult shows, often on late at night, that are rated for mature audiences and typically have advisory statements before them.
I don’t mind the idea of a group out there telling parents what’s on what show - after all parents do need to be informed to make informed decisions. And if any of this stuff was popping up on “family” shows, I would probably be outraged myself. Okay, maybe not outraged. How about “miffed”?
As for their “action alerts” to pressure tv execs to clean up television, more power to them. Tell the supplier what you demand. Just remember that those of us who don’t mind - and sometimes actually like - that stuff can pressure them as well. My guess is that since this stuff is becoming even more prolific, that side is winning.
I don’t envy parents raising kids today. I understand new technology and greater choices makes it that much harder to control what you kid has access to. But I don’t see anything here that constitutes gross, irresponsible, indecency on the part of the networks.

I watched a few of the clips...the Boston Legal one, I completely missed until I watched it a second time. (I missed where he came up from) and I’m sorry, but I didn’t find that to be a “gratuitous sexual innuendo” ANd last I checked, Boston Legal was on at 9pm and was rated for a mature audience. If parents are letting thier kids watch it its thier fault and not the networks. My kids are in bed by then.

Yeah I know...what was I thinking. No way we can have personal responsibility on the part of parents. That would just be wrong! I take my comment back...it’s all the networks fault. Let’s sue them all, or cancel all shows and replace them with Barney *shudders with fright*
Actually, barney is banned in my house LOL

Warning: Clips contain Graphic Content
How is this different to what the networks say before the show is shown; how is this even different? Confused.

Just had another look at that site; the listed Friends as the 4th worst family friendly series in 1997: here.

Because the first act of a true libertarian would be to abolish their own job.
Happy to help.

See? This is why Big L libertarianism is flawed. What we need is a pro-defense, small government, personal freedoms, preach but do not legislate morality, fiscally responsible dude.
Anyone know a single freaking politician like that? ;)

heh, nope
we have to pick what matters most and sacrifice… I’m really tempted to vote for democrats these days due to personal freedom issues
I’m so fucking sick of religious republicans… yeah, I’m talking to you catholics and christians out there…

My philosophy is that kids should NOT watch anything more than a Sesame Street type show. They can watch more mature matter as they get older. I still kept a rein on what they watched. Night time was usually watched together. We even had a whole month where we unplugged the TV. Very interesting the things a family can do without the “boob toob”. Family nite Boggle games are still a favortie, and all my kids are grown. The youngest is 21.

Yes mom you did. I think the worst thing the boys watch with me is Smackdown, and even that we haven’t watched as much because the Apprentice is on LOL
If I buy a movie that is R...I’ll watch it after they are in bed. Besides, DAmian knows how to work the DVD/VCR player and he is up at 6 am regardless of the day putting in one of “his” movies as he calls them.
If they do watch something that is too adult for them than as a parent I have to take the blame. I can’t blame the networks or the shows. They have labels in front of them letting you know the content.
My opinion is that too many parents are in the blame society mode instead of taking a good hard look at themselves and thier own actions. The parents are the ones who have to set the example.
Fortunately for me, my parents set an excellent one!

oh and P.S. ironmaiden aka mom...I totally forgot about that month when we unplugged the TV. I remember being upset about it at the time, but now...it was fun doing family game nights.

Oh man! That South Park clip was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time.
