Someone you should know - Corporal Merlin German

Sean emailed me this link (warning - graphic burns).  It’s horrifying, but when I went looking for more information I was even more horrified.  It’s like this Marine’s story isn’t worthy of news or something.

This is everything I could find about Marine Corporal Merlin German.  In February 2005 when he was just 18 years old, a roadside IED was set off in Baghdad.  German was burned over 97% of his body.  He was not expected to survive, but after over 100 surgeries, he has clearly defied his doctors.

This past October he was presented with a painting, Thomas Kincade’s “Heading Home.”

Corporal German returned the gift with one of his own - a shirt he made.  The front: “Got 3% chance of surviving, what ya gonna do?” The back: “A) Fight Through, b) Stay Strong, c) Overcome Because I Am a Warrior, or d) All of the Above!” D is circled.

Marines.  Gotta love ‘em. :)

Here’s what I want you to do; put heavy pressure on your Congresspersons to fund the Veteran’s Administration hospitals.  We are asking these young men to become warriors on our behalf, and when they come home broken, we’re not caring for them the way we should.  They answered the call.  Now they need your help.  If the government won’t stand up for them, someone has to, and those someones can be you and me.  We can force the government to stand by them.

I’ll admit it, I wasn’t ready for that.

But I’m still proud of that guy for surviving that. I’m not sure if that is the proper way of saying it though.

Though I am sure it is nothing compared to the paper cut John Kerry suffered.

Reminds me of Simon Weston in the Falklands War. Similar injuries very bad burns.

The BBC made several programs about him. He had his issues with depression and such. Then picked himself up and now runs an organisation called Weston Spirit helping deprived youngsters all over the UK.

I hope Marine Corporal Merlin German can achieve as much if not more.
