She can bring home the bacon

Put your money where your mouth is, lady.

During the exchange Saturday, Mrs. Clinton did say she was heartened by polls showing that most American would consider voting for a female candidate for president. “People are saying,’ Well, at least we’re ready,’ “the senator said. She also said she has detected “a certain impatience” to see a female president in America following the election of women to similar roles in other countries.

Hillary is unelectable as President.  However...Condi might have a chance.  She’d steal support from the black community, some women, most Republicans and if the choice was her or some lame-duck Democrat that currently leads that mess of a party...she’d get a lot of undecideds too.

I wonder if Hillary would support John Kerry if he was running against Condi Rice.  Would she still be rooting for a woman to take the job?

I wouldn’t put any real money on it.

I wonder if her opponent for New York Senator is going to make a big deal out of Hillary using this second term as nothing more than a springboard to a promotion - a 93% absence rate like Kerry, only to give up her seat to a Republican if she’s successful.

Is her absence rate really that frigging high?  How do her people manage to get the NY media all over the state to talk about her in such glowing terms if the broad never shows up for work?

Does anyone know much about Condi’s politics?

I still think McCain + Powell is the completly unbeatable combination. Pisses of the extremes of both parties but 65% in the middle would be pretty happy.

I have no idea what it is now, because she isn’t running yet.

Yet.

But given that she will be flying all over the country for almost two solid years (roughly 22 months, Jan ‘07 - Nov ‘08) while running for President, I expect her to have a “absence” percentage on a par with John Kerry’s - about 93% of floor votes and Committee meetings missed during the ‘03-’04 campaign.

But he collected 100% of his paycheck, even though he is arguably one of the richest Senators in the Chamber (and John Edwards was also in the top 5, IIRC).

One slight change...Powell/McCain.  I like Powell a LOT more than I like Mr. Restrict-free-speech-during-campaign-season.

Can you imagine the goodwill he could have garnered if he simply refused the paychecks?  For that matter, any of these guys that are independantly wealthy (which, in the Senate, most of them are ) could get a massive dose of feel-good by simply saying “No thanks.  Give it back to the general fund please.”

Oh I agree, I think that order would be a lot better, I just don’t think it would happen. Would be intersting to see them against each other in primaries to see who gets the top job.

A (just) democratic congress with those two as President/Vice would be perfect. I know you won’t agree with that bit though :)

Dosen’t anyone running for the Presidency have this problem though? Be they a governor, senator et all?

Arnie is only taking $1 per year (the lowest rate permitted by law, apparently), but if the 100 Senators were to refuse every penny of salary, that would only add about $16.25 million per year (the salary is only $162,100 per Senator, with the President pro tempore of the Senate, the Majority Leader and Minority Leader each making $180,100).

Given that the smallest “unit” in the Federal Budget is $100 million, it would be nothing more than a quixotic gesture for brownie points…

(That doesn’t include the staffing budgets or office maintenance, just their official salaries.)

Bob Dole took the honorable solution - he resigned the Senate on May 16, ‘96 to devote his time to his campaign.

Why didn’t Kerry do this? Why do I not expect Hillary to do so?. Note the adjective I used…
