Senator wants cable, satellite decency standards, needs ass kicked
This, shockingly, sticks in my craw.
“Cable is a much greater violator in the indecency area,” the Alaska Republican told the National Association of Broadcasters, which represents most local television affiliates. “I think we have the same power to deal with cable as over-the-air” broadcasters.
“There has to be some standard of decency,” he said.
Oh fuck you fuck you fuck you fuck you. It’s cable. You have to call a company, have them send a technician to your home, hook up a box to your television and PAY MONEY every month to have it come into your home.
IT’S NOT THE AIRWAVES.
Man I hate politicians sometimes. The FCC was never, ever supposed to be the moral arbiter of decency in America. YOU ARE. You own a remote control if you have cable. USE IT.
Is it just me, or am I becoming more disheartened with the Republicans lately? I’m actively starting to feel a rift that I did not feel before the election. I truly despise the direction we’re taking lately, but I don’t know what to do about it.
Why do Republican politicians hate freedom so much?
*UPDATE*
Ace seems to agree with me, and has another point.
Any party that tries to take away the titty-channels from a red-blooded American man is a party that’s looking to go the way of the Whigs.
Yep. Read the rest for a more detailed explanation.

is it just me, or does it seem like they are trying to balance the budget completely by fines by the FCC. They just raised indecency fines from 32,000.00 to 500,000.00 that is so freakin crazy. I can’t even calculate how much of a percent increase that is.

Republican or Democrat, it’s all about power. (Though I’d like to think that certain Congressmen, like Jo Leiberman or John McCain, aren’t as bad as the others)

Because if we gave them freedom, they might vote Democrat. :-p LOL

I completely agree as well. I am not religious and the religious right is asserting control over the party. And it’s really, really starting to piss me off.
Maybe I’ll vote for a Libertarian next time (sure they won’t win… but hey).

Gotta disagree about McCain, specifically because of McCain-Feingold.

You know, I agree with you JimK...I thought the whole basis of the Republican party was LIMITED government...not legislated morality. Where does parental authority come in?
Politics are increasingly run by the presupposition of a victim mentality. The politicians are giving less and less room for personal responsibility.

Because they’re not Republican politicians, they’re politicians who are part of the Republican party.

Rann, are you saying they’re only nominal Republicans?
Michael Savage was talking yesterday about the need for a third party, one committed to limited government....I tend to agree.

Both sides are into censorship, just censoring different things in different ways.
So far as I am concerned, as long as the government own the airwaves, it has every right to decide what goes on it. It SHOULD be the bland, largely inoffensive stuff that won’t really offend anyone. Now, this may be a good reason to say the gov’t should no longer control the airwaves, and I’m very open to that line of thinking. However, so long as they leave alone my cable, satellite, and internets. don’t give

Probably, Labosseuse. Paying lip service to the party and using its platforms to advance their own personal agendas.

If he can get this attached to the current bill already going through the senate isn’t there a good chance that it would kill the whole thing.Getting rid of the new fines and the other regulations.I have heard that some supporters of the current bill won’t support it with this added on.

Well you’ve got Republicans that want to censor everything that might contain an ounce of sexuality or adult themes, and then you’ve got Democrats who are certain they know how to raise your children better than you do so they’ll make sure you do it right. So these two groups go skipping hand and hand with an issue like this. Its obviously garbage and everyone should realize this with the newest ruling: The airing of Saving Private Ryan on Veterans’ Day was found not to be indecent.
So those 60 some stations that didn’t air it because they were worried about fines could have aired it. They did ask before the airing if it would violate the indecency laws, but the FCC said they can’t rule on it until after someone complains or some other bullshit. I’ve heard the hypocrisy of this best described on a radio show. Its a road and there’s a speed limit, but the speed limit isn’t posted. You need to drive on this road, but you don’t know the speed limit. There’s a cop on the road and you ask him the speed limit. And he can’t tell you the limit but the moment you go over the speed limit he’ll be sure to pull you over and write you a ticket. Sounds wonderful doesn’t it.

Ahh, but therein, Watson, lies the rub. The government does NOT own the airwaves. They are ceded to the people, in whole. The government only handles licensing. They *manage* the airwaves, but *we* own them, and it’s high time we started acting like it.

What’s going on with everyone lately? I’ve seen some poor proposals, but in the past month, for every dumb move the Dems make, we do something equally ignorant.
The FCC was created to regulate the frequency of the airwaves, and check out any mergers and scquisitions. They were not created to be the morality police.
Please see what I have to say about it.
Now here’s an interesting case. In Alaska, Senator Ted Stevens wants to bring the current indecency rules that have been written for network television onto cable. Despite what most people think, extended cable, which is the channels beyond 2 through 13, do not have to adhere to the same rules that network television does. If you turn on FX and watch The Shield, you’ll hear more four letter words than you could ever dream of. The same goes for Comedy Central, who turns off the decency meters and allows virtually anything after 10:00 PM. This is allowed, and there is nothing on the books that say’s it can’t happen. The extended cable channels want to attract a wider viewership, so they refrain from allowing indecent language until later in the night, which will also bring more advertisers. How in the world Stevens thinks this ha any chance of passing is beyond me. The FCC was originally created to regulate bandwidth, and make sure that mergers and acquisitions didn’t get out of hand. Not until a few years ago, only to be magnified by the Janet Jackson debacle, did they turn into morality police.
And that’s the truth!

Here in Australia we have a partially government funded channel called SBS, which is tasked with broadcasting foreign language films and programming of minority interest (where minority is defined in the mathematical sense of “Less of them than of the others"). Not so long ago, the feature film of the evening was called “The Sinful Nuns Of St Valentine”. This is a free to air channel, incidentally.
If you guys ever get rid of the nosy-parker wing of the Republican party you’ve got a chance of getting some of that sweet nun goodness on your TV sets.

i was down in florida at christmas and i must say your tv sucks so bad i feel sorry that you have to even pay for it. Seemed to me that 90% of the shows were commercials. No swearing and no nudity i can see why HBO is so popular. In Canada it is the opposite, you will see the sickest shit at night here, shows like KINK on showcase that show peoples kinky fantasies, and we the tax payers pay for this shit through governement grants. So i think a happy medium is needed, mind you having wild on uncensoreded at 8 pm is nice.

I completely agree, maybe I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that the Republican agenda included less government control over us, it’s seems like they’ve lost thier way.
