Safari for Windows

You know what?  It’s kind of ridiculous that every piece of software Apple makes for the Windows world is such a piece of garbage.  It does not inspire me to want to switch.  It just irritates me.  Apple released Safari for Windows yesterday, and it’s just horrible.  Forget the fact that on a Mac, you need to buy a third-party app just to make it a single-window browser.  You can’t even buy your way to basic tabbed-browser functionality in the Windows version.  It eats memory like Firefox on steroids.  It renders text in awful, bloated, looks-bold-but-isn’t ways.  It does stick to standards, but if that;s all I want I have Opera, and that’s faster, extensible and it works.

The Safari interface is awkward, the tabbed browsing sucks, and the pop-up blocking is a total failure.  Plus there are already six security exploits, two of which allow code execution on your machine.

Of course, like everything these days, it’s in “beta.” Stay away.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Exactly. It’s a beta. There are going to be a billion issues based on a billion different configurations. That’s why it’s a public beta. There’s no better way to stamp out bugs than to let the public use it and tell you what’s wrong. Hopefully we see large improvements in the final release.

Oh, and what do you mean by having to buy a third party app to make it a single window browser? I’m using the 3.0 beta in OS X (which apparently has a lot less bugs in OS X, which isn’t much surprise) and I’m not sure what you mean. Middle-clicking opens each link in a new tab instead of a new window. No need for an addon.

I can’t understand why anyone uses anything other than Opera on Windows. It’s a shame that it’s not as good on Linux, or I wouldn’t have to use Firefox at all.

I’m a little confused on that 3rd party app mention too… open-apple click opens in a new tab for me.  Since 2.x there’s been a “tabs” configuration bit in the config window.  You can do tabs or new windows.. your choice depending on how you click on a link.

Tabs seem to work ok for both the OSX and windows betas for me.

BTW, I actually usually use firefox.  I know it’s got it’s quirks, but since I spend all day at work on linux I’m used to it.  I actually rarely have a problem with it crashing or anything on me.  I do kill it once a week or so to make it free up ram, but that’s the only real problem I have.

OK, let me clarify - in order to get a single-window experience without middle-clicking every link...in order to get behavior that takes one option setting in Firefox or Opera - you need to buy an add-on for Safari.  It does not have an option for single-window only.

I can’t even do the middle click option as my middle button is mapped to a double click and I’m not changing that just for Safari!

Did I also mention that the entire help file for the windows version is written full of Mac instructions?  No option-click on the PC there, Jobs.  ;)

Ah.. you mean the option in firefox that says to open new links, including ones that want to open a new window, in a new tab instead… right?  If so, yeah, that’s not an option in safari (that I’ve found anyway).

I run a Mac and I don’t use Safari.

Go figure. I ran it for 12 hours on an Intel Mac (running Parallels) and it operated perfectly the whole time.

But, like you said, one word: “Beettaaa.”
