Rudy Giuliani for President, part 19786

Rudy Giuliani - more conservative than the rest?

Last week C-SPAN featured a discussion about Rudolph Giuliani that left me shaking my head. The gist of the guest’s message was that Giuliani was a “Rockefeller Republican” who was suddenly transformed into a darling of conservatives after 9/11. Today, Fox News echoed the same theme.

That’s quite wrong. Social conservatives have trouble with Giuliani, but by no stretch of the imagination is he a Rockefeller (i.e., liberal) Republican. In fact, in many ways Giuliani is the most conservative of the top-three candidates for the Republican nomination. He came by that conservatism in the toughest crucible.

The article goes on to spell out many, many reasons why conservatives and even libertarian-minded folks can consider Rudy a perfect choice for 2008, not the least of which is how he balanced NYC’s budget - by cutting spending to close the gap and cutting taxes to encourage economic growth.

He is tough as hell on crime.  In fact he might be too tough for my tastes.  He ran The City with an iron hand when it came to policing it.  Maybe that was precisely what New York City needed in order to escape the problems that Koch and Dinkins allowed to fester.  The point is, perhaps he should get some props from pro-cop and pro-defense conservatives for this?  Yes, he’s flawed on gun control, but he’s also learning how guns and gun politics work on a national stage as opposed to the second most liberal state in the union.  As far as I know right now, I don’t disagree with him on any other major social issues.

Right now, I like Rudy above all other choices.  I like the parts of him that are conservative and most of the parts that are socially liberal or moderate.  I would love to vote for him for President.  I want to vote for him, not against anyone else, although McCain is coming to the point where I will vote for Mickey Mouse just to see him fail.

I’d vote for him. Still, Rudy might have too much scandal in his past to make it, but I could be wrong.

If the Hildebeast gets the democrat nomination then all rudy would need is to survive the republican primaries, because I don’t think he can outscandal the clintons.

True. The media may ignore Democrat politicians’ little indiscretions, but the blogs and, more importantly, the people doing campaign ads won’t. Being reminded of the “vast right-wing conspiracy” every commercial break, anybody?
