RIP - Dell Axim
Sad news indeed - the Dell Axim is no more. If there is one single piece of geek gear that I have gotten more use from, doled out more abuse to and it still greets me with the exact same level of service as when I took it out of the box, it has to be my Dell Axim X5. I have abused this thing in every way possible, hacked it to hell and back, overclocked it, used it to play movies, made it do duty as my GPS navigation system, read e-books, played games...and here it sits, proudly working as well it ever has. Best performance for dollar ever. Not one thing I have ever bought that could be called a gadget has ever performed as well. Coming in second would be my Pronto remote, but one of those died on my in the early days and another needed warranty service. No, the Axim is still king of the gadgets around here...in fact I may want a new handheld because Windows Mobile 6 is so much better, but as long as this thing keeps working, I don’t need one.
You know, I never even named it. Maybe it’s been working all these years to impress me so I’d give it a name. Keep trying, little guy! Someday! (Psssst...don’t tell him I’m never going to name him for fear of breaking the streak.)

Hopefully there Axim Smartphone line will be just as impressive and functional as there PDA’s were/are. Although I know they are now just trying to focus back on there core PC/Server business…

I had an Axim once as it was required for a pointless IT class. It was nifty, but I sold it after that class because I really had no use for the thing. I don’t need a portable calendar, documents, etc. Solitaire and Jawbreaker were the things I used the most. I know some people have plenty of things to do with them, but for me, it was a glorified scribble toy.

That’s a true shame! I love my Axim X51v but no longer use it since I have my smartphones. But that certainly was hands-down, the best PDA I ever had the honer to own and use. Like you said Jim, that little guy would take the worst torture I could throw at it and he’d take it with a smile and keep on chugging along like it was no thing.
