Rather quits. Kinda.
CBS News just announced that Dan Rather will be stepping down from “CBS Evening News” anchordesk in March of 2005.
“I have been lucky and blessed over these years to have what is, to me, the best job in the world and to have it at CBS News. Along the way, I’ve had the honor of working with some of the most talented, dedicated professionals in the world, and I’m appreciative of the opportunity to continue doing so in the years ahead,” Rather said in a statement on the CBS News web site.
Network officials said Rather will continue to remain an employee of CBS, filing stories for both the Sunday and Wednesday editions of “60 Minutes.” CBS has yet to announce a successor.
The retirement announcement did not include any information on when the “independent” panel investigating the leadup to Memogate would be releasing its report.
Hey big surprise there! This is precisely and exactly what I predicted. What a scumbag. Go quietly into that good night, Dan. Try not to screw up your retirement the way you screwed up the trustworthiness of network news anchors.

I’m still wondering how long it’s gonna be before we hear about the “independent” investigation into Memogate.
I know that they put it off until after the election, so as not to “interfere with people’s perceptions”, but the election is over now, and they’re still stonewalling…
