Preaching gets old

Can someone explain to me why, during Stargate SG1, I was subjected to around 17 minutes of thinly-disguised pablum about the evils of Republicans, but when it came to the actual science fiction of how Sam gets home, it was all *poof* and a magic reset button and she’s magically home in her own particular universe.

GET OVER IT, PEOPLE.  BUSH WILL BE IN OFFICE UNTIL HIS TERM IS OVER.

The fact that it’s Stargate doing bitching about Republicans is kind of weird, considering. I kind of wonder if this is some sort of pronouncement from on high, since SciFi is after all the channel that produced one of the most insulting, offensive movies ever made. (Look, zombies of soldiers killed in Iraq rise up to influence the vote!)

If any of their little complaints were even remotely true they wouldn’t be able to voice their complaints at all.  Don’t you just love it:

“Our right to freedom of speech is being oppressed by the evil government.”

“If your right to freedom of speech is opressed why are you allowed to speak out about this evil government?”

“You shut up you’re not allowed to criticize me.”

The Simpsons is doing this too at the moment. It’s boring more than anything else.

Why can’t the “you’re not allowed to do anything about one dictator (BushRoveCheCo) unless you can do something about them all” argument work just as well against them as they were attempting to use it to defend Saddam?

Oh, that’s right… hypocrisy only counts when using it in tu quoque assertions against RethugliKKKans…

<sigh...> They almost did it.
They almost made it through a decade-plus
run without jumping the skark. (A rare thing in
sci-fi, really.)

God, it’s so depressing. They were so damned close!

But, I guess some clueless twit stuffed into a brooks brothers suit somewhere must have decided that, since they don’t have to worry about ratings or cancellations anymore with only a few episodes left, they might as well start filling the time with mindless hollywood-left-style political regurgitations.

<Sigh...> SO damned close.

The incredibly ironic thing is that earlier that day there was a SG rerun that was almost the same exact plot, w/o all the politicizing.  It was where Jackson was trapped in a alternate world where the Go’auld (sic) had taken over, and he had to use the Quantum Mirror to get back. Much more satisfying ending.

But for some reason this type of moral outrage shows up everywhere now, in all kinds of shows. In Drive, the Army wife had been erasing the phone messages and throwing away the mail that her husband had been called back up so that she wouldn’t be “the widow of a fake hero”.

In fairness to Drive, that line is there so that the soldier can refute it...plus it tugs at the females in the audience a little, as it’s an errant reaction, but one that is understandable.  I could smell the Tim Minear on that scene, and I really don’t think he’d be preaching about fake heroes…

Drive is the one show that, save for the woman we were all supposed to be mad at, didn’t preach (so far).  Maybe that’s why they canceled it.  :)

Watching Heroes tonight, I thought they took an aspect with the government gone power crazy without having it be preachy about the evils of the current administration.

Buzzion - dude, get out of my head...I just wrote basically the same thing in a post about tonight’s episode.
