Pat Tillman honored

I missed saying something for the Marine Corps anniversary and Veteran’s Day because I wasn’t feeling too good, but I’m not letting this pass

Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer was among about 50 former Arizona State teammates of Pat Tillman who gathered Saturday night to help the school retire the fallen soldier’s No. 42 jersey in a halftime ceremony.

Members of Tillman’s family were also on hand for the second such tribute at Sun Devil Stadium, during Arizona State’s home finale against Washington State. The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals retired Tillman’s jersey at their home opener on Sept. 19.

“He would be the first one to appreciate us all having a beer on his behalf,” Plummer said at a pregame gathering. “We’re all here paying tribute to him because we loved him dearly, and we miss him.”

The Military Order of the Purple Heart—made up of those wounded in battle—presented its initial Pat Tillman Patriot Award to his widow, Marie, as the Arizona State band spelled out USA.

The former teammates, some of them in tears, formed a half-circle at the 42-yard line as the Arizona State band formed the number 42 and a framed jersey was unveiled. Washington State players wore a “PT 42” decal on their helmets.

I’m very glad to see that he wasn’t forgotten as just a media story.  Tillman was someone who the more you learn about him the more you realize he’s worth learning about.

RIP, Ranger.

I’ll let you slip by on not wishing me a happy birthday this year. But you better remember all of us for 230! Oohrah to all the fellow Marines past and present.

Tillman was indeed the ype of person that young boys should be striving to be like. Not punk “gangsta” rappers, or spoiled athletes or dimwitted actors. The man first gave up an enormous contract from the Rams because he was loyal to the Cardinals and wanted to stay with them. Then, he took it further after 9-11 and gave all the money up to go fight for freedom in Afghanistan. That says it all. Ted Rall, and that punk Rene Gonzales from UMass (remember him) deserve a serious public asskicking for spitting on his memory.

I was at the game Saturday.  I can tell you that it was very moving.  It was especially neat to see the fly-over of 4 Apache helicopters.  One pulled out for the missing man formation and I thought we were going to have a collision.  Guess it wasn’t that close, but a little scary just the same.  At half-time, everyone was on their feet, and no one sat until the ceremony was over.  Just another quick note, at last Saturdays game a Stanford player (#71) knelt in the endzone after the game by the PT 42 said a quick prayer and pointed skyward.  I thought that was pretty classy.  P.S.  Jim, Janna made a nice sign to hold up at the game.  It showed Pat Tilman making a hit on a U of Arizona player (Yeah!!!!!).  The sign said God Bless You Pat.  Real nice.

They also talked about him frequently during the Arizona Cardinals vs. NY Giants game on Sunday. Who won the game? The red state, of course.

Yep. The cardinals are finally starting to gel too. lately, they are doing all the little things right, and when things need to get done, they have done them. They have a very winnable game against carolina next week. After that, they get their first real challenge since they’ve gotten on this roll against the Jets.

See Mom, all those years I’ve been making wrestling signs paid off! ;-)

I know we were just walking into the stadium when the Apache flyover occured and trust me, they looked VERY close to colliding. Thank goodness they didn’t.

As we were walking to our car and mom you didn’t get to see this part, we passed a few WSU fans who said “ASU Sucks” but then one of the guys saw my sign and he goes, “But that sign is awesome...good job”. It was really cool to see even the WSU fans on thier feet the whole time applauding Tilly and paying thier respects.

I’m really glad that they didn’t just focus on his miltary service either. They really played up his academic accomplishments which were also awesome.
I’m glad we got to go to the game, especially as a family. Damian was my “date” and he loved seeing football live the for the first time. And to see such a moving tribute for such a well deserved hero is something I will never forget and I hope that he never will either.
