New TV shows so far

Based on the comments here, I decided to whip together a little post about the new shows I’ve watched so far:

LIKED:

Chuck.  Big surprise, based on the description I thought “Oh, here we go” but I ended up really liking it.  The lead is well-cast, nerdy enough to buy as a geek but functional enough to buy as a “thrust into the spy world” guy.  Plus, Adam Baldwin!  Awesome.  And a super-hot chick that is a badass.  Always a plus.

SORTA THOUGHT IT WAS OK:

Journeyman.  Yes, it’s Quantum Leap, but the star is Lucius Verenas from Rome, and he’s great.  Plus, the traveler jumps back and forth a lot, so it’s a slightly updated take on the concept.  Slightly.  I hate the guy’s wife already though…

WISH IT WAS BETTER, AND THINK MAYBE I’LL CHECK IN THREE OR FOUR EPISODES FROM NOW TO SEE IF IT IMPROVED:

Reaper.  The first episode suffered greatly from first episode-itis, meaning they tried to cram seven weeks of writing and plot development into one show.  It’s totally trying to be Brimstone meets Buffy meets Clerks...and Kevin Smith directed the premiere, so you can guess where that Clerks bit came from.  It could be half-decent, but as a summer series, not a real show.

HATED IT AND WISH DEATH ON THE CREATORS:

Big Bang Theory.  Just frigging terrible.  Awful.  It was crushed under the weight of trying to be so geeky and so “clever.” Plus the lead nerd sucked (that guy who used to be on Roseanne) and the beta nerd was about the only thing worth filming.  The “hot girl” is cross-eyed and three feet tall, but man what an ass.  Not worth watching the show to see it though…

Bionic Woman.  Everything about this show screams bad SciFi Network crap.  Same team that makes all the bad SciFi shit...and half the production team from BSG, who seem to have gotten unbelievably lucky with that particular title.  This is more bad Canadian actors (and one Brit) doing rehashed, tired cliches with technobabble and a washed-out faux-noir color pallette.  Oh, and the premier was written by the chick that wrote and produced “Birds of Prey,” another failed “empowered chick” show designed to alter SciFi’s demographics and bring in some girls.  Anyway, the star sucks, the support cast blows chunks and the only person worth watching on the show won’t be there much longer, as she already has a job on Battlestar Galactica.

Looks like Ron Moore is the genius on BSG, by the way.  David Eick is creating a pile of crap on Bionic Woman.

I thought the suck I was sensing from Bionic Woman seemed familiar. While for quite awhile, Birds of Prey was one of the few decent comics DC had going for it (until it started getting ruined too), the show was pure and utter shit from the first minute.

Bionic Woman just had the same frequency coming off of it. Glad I called it there and didn’t waste an hour of my life.

Reaper definitely suffered from Smith-itis.  Here’s hoping he takes a more hands-off Executive Producer role.

Gotta disagree with you on Bionic Woman. I really enjoyed it, but think it can desprately fall apart rather easily.
“Chuck” was great, better than I totally thought. And I love Adam Baldwin, especially seeing him in the green shirt at the end.

Watched Chuck on your recommendation, and you failed to mention Tony Todd and the cute Asian chick at the Nerd Herd.

I’m sure he didn’t realize that your tastes ran that way, Joe. *snarf*

And I love Adam Baldwin, especially seeing him in the green shirt at the end.

With that nasty hairpiece, too. The Oriental guy also trying for the assistant manager’s position is hilarious.

That blonde CIA agent/ninja was REALLY hot on the dance floor, making Chuck almost cream in his BVDs while still taking down an entire hit squad.

I gotta say “welcome back” to the new season of “The Unit”, which did not fail to excite.

Dang… missed the Unit.

I agree on Chuck, didn’t like Journeyman, Liked the Reaper, didn’t bother with Big Bang, and am holding out hope for Bionic Woman.  Both Starbuck and Tyril?  Cool!

Bionic Woman.  Everything about this show screams bad SciFi Network crap.

The really sad thing is they must have thought this was really a great idea!

Green Lantern#9  Posted by Green Lantern United States on 09/28 at 04:44 PM -

I agree with most, I watched Chuck just because it was before Heros and I really liked it.  Has the right mix of comedy and action and it is not trying to take itself to seriously.

Journeyman was ok, total update of Quatum Leap.  He really traded down though, the dead girlfriend was WAY hotter than the wife.

Biggest dissappointment: Bionic Woman, how the hell did that crap get on the TV.  Mind you I really like these kind of shows.  I love BSG, Smallville, Atlantis.  But this show blows.  The acting was flat, and the action scenes looked to fake for a prime time show, the producers should watch Smallville for CGI tips.  What really pisses me off is they get this crap on TV and nobody picked up Aquaman.  If you haven’t seen it, download the pilot from iTunes.  I know it sounds cheesy, but the pilot was actually pretty good, with some hot chicks too.  Even had a really good cast and writers lined up.

Anyway, its crap like the BW that is going to keep stuff like Aquaman off the air.

and the action scenes looked to fake for a prime time show,

Anyone else notice that when they had her jumping across the buildings they didn’t actually show her make the leap?  Instead they cut to a ground view and you see her going through the air, but the actual jump was absent.

Did anyone watch Life?

Did anyone watch Life?

Yup, and it was just okay. Interesting premise, and I like most of the characters, but overall it just didn’t jell for me. The heart of it is the wronged cop figuring out his own crime, and what happens when he does? If the show isn’t strong enough on its own, then it will just fall in on itself.

That was almost exactly what I thought. Without the story of the framed cop, it’s just another Law & Order CI or Monk, with the slight twist that the “straight partner” has demons as well.

Anyone else think that Apple must’ve kicked in some $ for Journeyman due to the serious placement the iPhone had in a few places already?
