Mailbag, plus Project VALOUR-IT and Let’s Bring ‘Em Home

Letters!  We get letters…

Jim,

Why aren’t you posting anything at all about Iraq these days I mean the isg thing is worth a mention right?

Well, yeah, I guess.  In the fact that it doesn’t matter, I suppose it’s worth mentioning.  If you want ISG debate and discussion, may I suggest visiting Ace?

See, the bottom line is that no matter how much we talk on and on about Iraq, the government is gonna do what it is gonna do.  Congressional Democrats aren’t even looking to change the current course of action all that much, which is the ultimate proof that our government is screwed eight ways from Sunday.  Half of these people campaigned on conservative ideas and the other half campaigned on far left ideals, and none of them want to implement either strategy now that they’ve been elected.  It’s time to collect that lobby money, I suppose.

Nothing you or I say will make any difference in the course of action in Iraq at all.  Not one damn thing will change.  But.

Because there is always a but…

If we argue non-stop about Iraq, we will end up solidly in one of two camps - one camp that believes A-L and thinks that anyone who disagrees is a dirty camel humper, and another camp that despises those people because only M-Z can possibly be true.  I am sick of it.  I’m sick of watching people I used to consider intelligent prattle on about WMDs or torture or troop levels or up-armoring or the newest blogpost trend-o-the-moment - silly string.  I’m tired of being judged either too liberal or too conservative because I hold one particular ideal or another.  I’m tired of wishing for competent wartime leadership over and over like a broken record.

Hey, should we update that phrase?  I’m tired of I’m tired of wishing for competent wartime leadership over and over like a scratched CD.  Yeah, that’s better.

Instead of babbling about things beyond my pay grade (so to speak) I am contributing to projects like Project VALOUR-IT and LBEH.  It’s more important to me that the men and women who volunteer to stand on the wall so you and I don’t have to know that we appreciate their choice.

Would you rather argue with each other pointlessly about something none of us can change or would you rather help a soldier this holiday season?

Again: Project VALOUR-IT and Let’s Bring ‘Em Home.  Express yourself positively, in a way that can really make a difference.  These are my choices - You may choose other organizations Whatever you choose, I urge you to NOT give to any political PACS or committees.  Don’t pretend that sending money to the RNC or DNC, or MoveOn or MoveAmericaForward will help anyone.  It will not.  It will only serve to widen the gulf between the left and the right and line the pockets (and bolster the egos) of the activists that created these organizations.

You’d be better off picking a homeless guy at random and just tossing him your wallet.  At least you would know he spent the money on himself, he wouldn’t try to tell you he was spending the money to make your life better.

Awesome post JimK.  If only more people on this internet wrote like that, instead of picking sides and rooting like all of this was a hockey game or something.

I had the honour this past Saturday night of hanging out with a Cdn soldier who had just returned from Aphganistan (only hours before he met up with us).  It was just awesome to hang out with him and hear his stories.  And to help ease him back.  Big culture shock.  Lots of beer and shots helped though!

Anyway, I just wanted to mention that.  It was such an experience for me to be able to talk with him.  He came home to a pretty bad situation, so everyone was trying to make things easy for him.  But even without that, I could tell everyone just felt so fortunate to be able to hang out with him again.

My best to all soldiers returning home, and those still there fighting.  Heros all.

Up4 - thanks, and what you did was 100% cool, man.  Nicely done.

Next time you see a Canadian soldier, tell ‘im or ‘er this American said thanks.  :)
