John McCain isn’t fit to lead a parade

Can you imagine, in 2007, watching a human being stand in front of you and have this exchange?

Reporter: “Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS?”

Mr. McCain: “Well I think it’s a combination. The guy I really respect on this is Dr. Coburn. He believes – and I was just reading the thing he wrote– that you should do what you can to encourage abstinence where there is going to be sexual activity. Where that doesn’t succeed, than he thinks that we should employ contraceptives as well. But I agree with him that the first priority is on abstinence. I look to people like Dr. Coburn. I’m not very wise on it.”

(Mr. McCain turns to take a question on Iraq, but a moment later looks back to the reporter who asked him about AIDS.)

Mr. McCain: “I haven’t thought about it. Before I give you an answer, let me think about. Let me think about it a little bit because I never got a question about it before. I don’t know if I would use taxpayers’ money for it.”

Q: “What about grants for sex education in the United States? Should they include instructions about using contraceptives? Or should it be Bush’s policy, which is just abstinence?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “Ahhh. I think I support the president’s policy.”

Q: “So no contraception, no counseling on contraception. Just abstinence. Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?”

Mr. McCain: (Long pause) “You’ve stumped me.”

Q: “I mean, I think you’d probably agree it probably does help stop it?”

Mr. McCain: (Laughs) “Are we on the Straight Talk express? I’m not informed enough on it. Let me find out. You know, I’m sure I’ve taken a position on it on the past. I have to find out what my position was. Brian, would you find out what my position is on contraception – I’m sure I’m opposed to government spending on it, I’m sure I support the president’s policies on it.”

Q: “But you would agree that condoms do stop the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Would you say: ‘No, we’re not going to distribute them,’ knowing that?”

Mr. McCain: (Twelve-second pause) “Get me Coburn’s thing, ask Weaver to get me Coburn’s paper that he just gave me in the last couple of days. I’ve never gotten into these issues before.”

I love how he needs an assistant to tell him what he used to think, and also how he asked if we were “on the Straight talk Express.” Apparently not, Senator McCain.  We are in fact on the Hemming and Hawing Express.  We are on the “Afraid to piss off the Evangelicals” Express.  We are on the Wishy-Washy Politician Express.  About the last god-damned thing we are on is the Straight Talk Express.

Coward.

Let’s say for the sake of argument that yo are an evangelical Christian with beliefs so deep, so strict that you cannot condone the use of condoms for any reason by anyone, ever.  Let’s take that as fact.  The question posed to John McCain at the end of this exchange was “Do you think contraceptives help stop the spread of HIV?” To which the man who wants to lead this country replied “You’ve stumped me.”

I don’t care what your religious beliefs are, anyone who doesn’t know that condoms reduce - to *ANY* degree - the spread of HIV is either lying to my face or not smart enough to lead the country.  Since I believe John McCain knows damn well that condoms help stop - or at the very least slow - the spread of HIV, I conclude he is lying.  Why?  To court the far right that tanked him the last time he ran.

Guess what, Senator?  The far right may be vocal, but the rest of the right side of the aisle is a lot bigger.  Be careful with whom you get into bed, Senator McCain.

My God I am sick of the same old names and faces...I totally understand why people are drawn to Barack Obama.  No, he hasn’t accomplished anything and yes, he speaks in vague generalities most of the time, but at least he’s new.

By the way, the answer to the original question, “Should U.S. taxpayer money go to places like Africa to fund contraception to prevent AIDS?” is as follows:

“If after consideration and study we find that we can help, that we have a surplus after caring for the American people first, and that the help would in fact be effective and not a wasted gesture, then yes, I would support such a program.”

I do so love the town I live in. As I was driving back from the store, I saw an ad on a bus stop that said something along the lines of “Contraception is murder”. Not phrased quite so extremist, but that was the gist of it.

Of course, while I was at the store, I heard a mother tell her kid that she’d “done a search on the internet” and found out that letters with pronunciation marks over them (the ` over the e in Pokemon, in this case) meant that whatever it was on was Satanic. You can tell whose house doesn’t contain a dictionary.

I read it on the internet.  It must be true.

what a fucking let down that man ended up being.  a few years ago, i knew quite a few people on my side of the fence who would have given him a fair consideration.

and rann:  OMG where the hell do you live?!

then again, we all know the letter “E” is THE DEVIL ;)

Rann: Was it The Water Boy’s Mama?

I hear people like that all the time in every place I visit.

But back to the topic...I live in Arizona (McCain’s state) and I have never liked that man from day one!  He has always been like that!  I am starting to think that he has no views or opinions of his own.  He has always kowtowed to what ever group he speaks to.  He will support what ever group of people that is in front of him at any time, and tell them exactly what they want to hear.  Weather it be the right, the left, the Nazi-midget-progeria-satanic-circus-clowns-for-Buddah.  He’s one of the biggest dancing monkeys I’ve ever witnessed.

I think you’re on to something, but it’ll never pass. I think we should cut off ALL aid to every foreign nation, other than that required by our mutual defense treaties and let them go their own way.

Tough love.

If they want the American Way Of Life, with all of the bells and whistles and indoor plumbing that comes with such largess, then let them apply to become new states in the United States, granting them all the rights and privileges - AND RESPONSIBILITIES - appertaining thereto.

But until then, they deserve no more time at our taxpayer-funded trough.

Plain and simple.

I wonder how much we would save...?

jo-jo: Tulsa. Right in the bible belt, with a church on every corner. Ironically enough, we also have a tattoo parlor on every OTHER corner and enough gay/bi people to make the call center industry FABULOUS. ‘Tis a city of many contrasts.

I think most Republicans do realize that they do need the support of the religious right.  Bush had it because he was clearly one of them.  McCain doesn’t and won’t because other candidates are going to catch him in his doublespeak and question dodging on issues that are important to the fundies.  Candidates like Gingrich and Guliani will be able to point out where they share common goals and when even if they, those areas will not be that much of an impasse.

I really think that the one candidate that the liberal media and democrats are afraid of getting the Republican nomination is Guliani, and you’ll be constantly seeing reports on him being pro-abortion and gun control throughout the campaign.

Not a lot. The reason your plan is doomed to failure is that isolationism doesn’t work in our world of universal interconnection between nations. If you really want to cut the aid budget, get rid of tariffs and subsidies (particularly the agricultural kind) and watch their economies take off like a rocket. They won’t need the aid then, and it’s a lot harder to divert commercial activity into a Swiss bank account than an aid grant.

Rann Aridorn#9  Posted by Rann Aridorn United States on 03/20 at 03:13 AM -

So, basically, instead of giving them less money, we should keep giving them money AND let them do pretty much whatever they want, including flooding our market with untaxed stuff they’ve produced with near-slave labor and forcing our own manufacturers out of business?

Why that’s… that’s BRILLIANT.

No, wait, that other thing… retarded.

(Which is an oversimplification of what is a complex issue, but hey, just saying to “get rid of” the tariffs and subsidies is too.)
