James Kim found

They found his body in the woods.

The body of missing CNET editor James Kim has been located, authorities announced Wednesday.

Arrangements are being made to transport Kim to an undisclosed location, according to police. Kim had been missing in the remote southwestern Oregon wilderness for 11 days. The Kim family has asked not to be contacted at this time.

“They have been true champions throughout this whole ordeal,” Josephine County Undersheriff Brian Anderson said of the family at a press conference. “We just want them to know our prayers have been with them from day one.”

I knew this was going to end badly from yesterday’s news that they found items of clothing.  The last stage of hypothermia before you pass out is that you feel hot.  I feel bad for his wife and children, and the family who have to be thrilled that the grandkids are safe with their mom, but that Kim didn’t make it.

People, please take a lesson from this, as we all drive our cars all over the damn place and this can happen to any of us - NEVER LEAVE THE CAR.  No matter how great an idea it seems, or how desperate you are, don’t leave the car.  Take some water on any road trip.  With water and the car, you stand a good chance of surviving.  Without either, you will not be so lucky.  Don’t leave the car.

My Tivo connects to the internet via my broadband connection, and with this they offer different programs just for the Tivo consumer.  One of them is from Cnet.  When I got home tonight the new one had downloaded, and there was Mr. Kim.  So sad to see him talking about MP3 players and knowing he’s passed on. Always thought he was a nice guy.  I feel bad for his family. Just drives home the point like you said Jim, if something like this happens DON’T LEAVE THE CAR.

I have a friend who would be dead if she followed that advice. They gave up the search for her. She spent 8 days in the woods and walked out. She was dressed for the weather a bit better.

There are so many little things that caused this tragedy. But I guess the biggest lesson is: when you are lost and you look at the map, always head for the big highway. If you choose the little side road that looks like it will connect, nine times out of ten it’s some gravel road that no one drives. Turn around and head back to civilization when you first realize that you are going the wrong way. And always, always have hats and warm clothing for everyone in the car when travelling anyplace that could have cold weather.

My personal opinion is that people stay with the car too damn long. You start to fail physically after a prolonged bout with cold and no food. If they haven’t found you in a few days, if the weather allows for it and you have gear, walk out exactly the way you came in.
