It’s about time, Dick

I firmly believe Cheney has done the right thing here.

Vice President Dick Cheney, whose daughter Mary is a lesbian, drew criticism from both proponents and foes of gay marriage Tuesday after he distanced himself from President Bush’s call for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.

At a campaign rally in this Mississippi River town, Cheney spoke supportively about gay relationships, saying ``freedom means freedom for everyone,’’ when asked about his stand on gay marriage.

``Lynne and I have a gay daughter, so it’s an issue our family is very familiar with,’’ Cheney told an audience that included his daughter. ``With the respect to the question of relationships, my general view is freedom means freedom for everyone ... People ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to.

``The question that comes up with the issue of marriage is what kind of official sanction or approval is going to be granted by government? Historically, that’s been a relationship that has been handled by the states. The states have made that fundamental decision of what constitutes a marriage,’’ he said.

That’s right, Dick, it IS a freedom thing, and kudos to you for growing the balls to say it in public.  Now go talk to your boy and explain to him why he’s dead wrong on this one.  Get him to either change his mind or at the very least, shut the hell up about it.

I had a discussion not long ago about the Cheneys - I commented that I thought it was cool of Lynne Cheney to speak out against the Defense of Marriage Act. My discussion mate looked at me with abject horror, and explained to me that Mrs. Cheney HAS to support gay marriage because her daughter is gay (I wasn’t aware of any rule to that effect) and that that Dick COULDN’T ever agree with her publically, so it meant nothing, and she’s anything but “cool.” I understood that this was Democratic partisanship, and shrugged it off, but it’s cool that Mr. Cheney had the guts to step up and say something himself. It won’t earn him any points with people who have already made up their minds that he is 100% bad, but it earned a few points with me.
