Idiots try to claim using Firefox is stealing
Why, you may ask? Because Firefox recommends and supports Adblock Plus, and that means most websites don’t get their ads displayed. Some unnamed group of unknown websites have decided this is theft.
Oh shut the hell up. They put the pages on the publicly accessible parts of their web servers. If they want to guarantee revenue, the stupid little Luddite geeks, then they should put them behind a paid wall. I say this as someone who is solely dependent on ads to pay his near-300-a-month server bill. I know lots of my readers block the ads. So be it. Way it goes. I block lots of ads at other sites. Not Blogads or Amazon stuff, since that would be really hypocritical and I wouldn’t see if they;re working on my own stuff, but I block almost everything else. Especially Google text ads and almost everything Yahoo throws up. And every ad for every newspaper site I visit. It’s like an arms race.
By the way, if you should come across some site that has you blocked due to using Firefox, and you still care to visit them, Firefox supports another trick to “steal” from these idiots: User Agent Switcher.
Can’t beat the tech, boys and girls. Someone will always find a way in. Might as well throw open the doors and act like you want people to see your sites.

i say fuck all ads, including yours (sorry!)
also, the more intrusive the ad, the LESS likely i am to give a crap about its contents ;)

I would ask these assholes if they would mind people following them around their day, randomly and intermittently blocking their view of what they wanted to see with intrusive ads that require a positive action on their part to get rid of (say turning in a complete circle and saying the word “Ignore” - about the same as having to move the mouse to the little ‘x’ and clicking it) for every one of them that “pops up” in their face.
I would do that job. Be the guy holding cards up in front of them. Not for long, but long enough to enjoy the rage and frustration they would feel every time one popped in from of them.
Or, we could invent some of that sci-fi “displays in midair” crap and just do it all remotely. And tape their reactions for a new Fox summer reality show. :)

I totally understand! You won’t hear me complain if you block them.

I may start using firefox exclusively just because of this - if I can’t access a site because I am using it, then I probably really don’t want to be there anyway....

I use Adblock fairly extensively, but I don’t block ads on all sites. I use this rule: If the ad source uses “faked user interface” ads - ads that show a picture of standard user interface elements in order to entice a user to click on them, I block them. If the ads are for obvious scams, I block them. If the level of animation all over the page is so obnoxious it prevents me from reading, I block them. Unfortunately, the behavior just described covers over 90% of Internet advertising. The other 10% I leave in place. If advertisers respect me, I’ll respect them. Otherwise, Adblock clears my screen of their shit.
That being said, there probably aren’t any ad servers that won’t guarantee they won’t serve up shitty, deceptive, and / or obnoxious ads. So it sucks for the web sites that would actually like to play nice with their readers.

I’ve been a devoted FF convert for about 2 years. Sites that don’t work in FF don’t get my time or attention. I hate IE, period. It sucks. IE 7 is a joke and not even close to as good as Matrox they stole from. Fuck em’. I DVR all the shows I want to watch and fast forward through the commercials, did the same thing with my VCR back in the day. Boo Hoo. If I want to buy something I will research it and find the best deal. Do these assholes really think I’m going to run off and buy a new car cuz I saw it on tv?
It would be nice if radio found a way to be original and lose the car dealer commercials. I mean really, WTF? I guess I’ll just tune in to my Yahoo if I don’t want the commercials. Now that the consumer has a choice and control over watching their ads they get all feel sorry for me, nope, not going to happen.

unfortunately, there are some pages that don’t seem to work *right* in FF, and i don’t think it’s intentional. for example, westlaw, which is the legal research database. so, i have no choice but to use IE. i use it through FF, though, via the :)IE Tab add on

If you ask the super internet elitist geeks out there you’ll probably find that its because the website you’re looking at isn’t confirming to some internet webpage standard.

Safari, which I very very very rarely use, has a great “private browsing” feature. one click and nothing you do (internet browsing-wise) is logged or saved on the computer.

Hi guys, computer-ignorant user over here…
I have a shitty old laptop that runs on Windows XP and takes forever to do much of anything. I have IE 7 and it’s kind of a pain in the ass. Will Firefox run faster? In other words, is the program “lighter” than IE7?

Helo: default as installed, yes. As you add extensions the memory usage climbs, but generally Firefox is lighter and faster than IE in every way. Even as it eats memory it still responds and renders faster.

Hey JimK, where is that FF memory usage tweak? I tried to search the site and got an SQL error.

This is nothing more than advertisers whining because people get up to fetch a snack or go to the bathroom during commercial breaks. TiVO offered the option to fast-forward through the commercials and people snapped it up like it was going out of style.
If I don’t want to see the advertisements, I shouldn’t be forced to do so.
Then charging them extra to make up for the “lost revenue” of the people who make the cards when they complain about the hassle.
Fair’s fair, right?
