I guess it really works

After my last sleep study, which was last Thursday night, we discovered that yes, indeed my pressures were set way, way too high on the BiPAP machine.  I’m down from a massive 25/19 to a reasonable 20/16.  This means less tightening of the mask, more comfort and more usage.  Yay!

So Monday night I go to bed.  4 hours later I wake up with the entire harness and mask in front of me on the bed, blowing air like crazy.  No memory of taking it off.  I put it back on and slept for thee more hours, but all day Tuesday I had a headache, felt awful, my eyes wouldn’t focus on anything more than three feet away...took me all day to realize that’s how I used to feel every single day.  It was sleeping without the mask that did it.

Last night I only slept a total of five hours, but all with the mask on and I feel at least five times better than I did the day before.

I guess this CPAP/BiPAP stuff really does work...and it’s finally working for me.

I’ve been using one for six years and it makes all the difference in the world.

I gather you suffer from sleep apnea? I’ve sometimes wondered if I might. How did you discover you had it; what symptoms?

Do you feel tired all the time?  Fall asleep at your desk or while driving?  Does your partner kick you out of bed because you’re snoring so loudly she/he can’t sleep?

It was the snoring that kicked me in the ass to have it checked out.  My wife also observed me stopping breathing.  Once I got used to it, my life changed.

No, don’t have those problems. I just have trouble sometimes getting to sleep or sleeping all night. A deviated septum (and an alergy to cats) sometimes wakes me with difficulty breathing, though.

You mean its not some bet between doctors about making people do ridiculous things?  “I bet you can’t convince people to wear a mask while they sleep that blows air on their face”

I swear, its not a crazy bet.  Or, maybe it is and it just happens to help. :)

Dude, it;s just SO over the top.  Big mask, long-ass tube, moist air blowing in your faceholes...it’s madness.  But it works.

It’s also much better than the alternative (burn out the back of your throat until it’s a hard tube of scar tissue that can’t collapse).
