Hi, everyone. We’re ignorant radicals and we’ve come for your science.
I am starting to develop a hatred for....no, make that a deep, passionate, INTOLERANT hate for “intelligent design” nut bags.
Pressure from ultraconservative religious groups has prompted some theaters equipped with the high quality panoramic IMAX screens to cancel showings of several movies which refer to Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution.
Some politically powerful religious groups dismiss the theory, despite its widespread acceptance throughout the rest of the world.
Instead, they advance a hypothesis that holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been designed by an “intelligent” being, i.e. God, and is not the result of random natural selection.
Many scientists have savagely attacked “intelligent design”, arguing the theory is not significantly sound, and is simply the latest political shot from religious creationists.
Since the beginning of this year, numerous movie theaters in highly religious states in the US south have refused to show documentary films like “Cosmic Voyage,” “Volcanos of the Deep Sea” and “Galapagos” named after the islands Darwin used to showcase his theory.
The films crimes? Mentioning the idea that the Universe is the product of a “Big Bang” explosion or that the origin of life is in the oceans.
OK, using this same phrase in the same way so soon after the last one is like, blog-gauche or something, but…
WHAT. THE. FUCK. IS. WRONG. WITH. YOU. PEOPLE?
Forget the whole science debate. Set that aside. Who the fuck gave you the right to decide if a theater would show a film, regardless of the theories contained within? Are you completely insane? Do you not understand that the counter to speech you don’t like is more speech?
MAKE YOUR OWN FILM THAT COUNTERS THE THEORIES IN THIS ONE. YOU BACKWARD-ASSED, IGNORANT MORONS. Of course, to do that you’ll have to use science, and I know that scares you.
What? You really made a film? Sweet. Bet you want it shown, huh? Should science folks shut you down? Would science folks even try?
Blocking scientific movies from IMAX theaters is only one part of the creationists’ agenda; they also promote their own films that document their theory of a cosmos-crafting higher intelligence.
“The Privileged Planet: The Search for Purpose in the Universe,” is one such film, based on work by University of Iowa astronomy professor Guillermo Gonzalez.
Stirring outrage from the scientific community, the Museum of Natural History at Washington’s world-famed
Smithsonian Institution agreed to show the movie. The Smithsonian, however, was forced to issue a statement making clear that it did not consider intelligent design geled with scientific fact.
“We have determined that the content of the film is not consistent with the mission of the Smithsonian Institution’s scientific research,” the statement said.
But the Smithsonian still plans to show “Privileged Planet” as scheduled on June 23.
Guess not.
If you ever needed an example of the significant differences between science culture and religious culture, there it is. The bible thumpers can’t STAND the idea of someone being exposed to science, but science people are perfectly willing to let the bible thumpers show their film.

Jim,
I’m really offended that you haven’t taken the literal word of God literally. Everyone knows that the earth is only 10,000 years old. It is the work of Satan if you try to dispute it or suggest that a group of sheep herders didn’t precisely write down everything that happened exactly as it happened. Especially when your silly “science” confirms Biblical stories.
I’m praying for your soul*.
Sean
*No, not really.

That oral history thing is one aspect of the creationist dogma that kills me. How could a rational person not understand that when you speak a story for hundreds of decades and only then get to write it down, that it may not quite be the same story with which you started?

You don’t understand. For a dedicated Christian, this sort of thing isn’t a matter of life and death. It’s a matter of eternal life and death. If they don’t do, what they perceive to be, their job correctly innocent people could go to hell forever. It’s so fucked up to think that god would entrust a bunch of stupid ass people with the eternal fate of other people, but there you have it. That’s what they believe. They sure as hell don’t really give a shit about politics. Saying stuff really slowly with CAPS. AND. PERIODS. is not going to help. They are beyond help. There’s nothing that can be done except to disassociate yourself.
