Heroes last night

Agrrrrrgghhhhhh!  The TiVo cut off the last minute or two after Claire did that thing with her thing.  WHAT HAPPENED?

Spoilers below…

As for the rest of it...it was kind of a placekeeping episode...just slowly moving things forward.  Not that I’m complaining about that.  Totally necessary.  I do have a complaint though.

Heroes is doing too many deus ex machinas this season, things they never did before.  Like, why can Hiro ride a horse?  AT ALL?  Riding a horse so well as to be able to lean down and scoop a fair maiden up is NOT a skill you pick up during a lifetime of sitting in front of a computer and reading comics.

The other dumb writing move was that the newspaper in Buttfrig, Nowheresville - where Claire and HRG are - showed a photo of Hiro’s father’s dead, bleeding corpse on the front page?  WTF?  That doesn’t happen, like EVER.  They should have found another way for HRG to see that image.  Newspapers don’t print that kind of thing.  It was a deus ex machina designed to make sure he saw it so they could tell us about the paintings.  Lazy writing.  I really hope this doesn’t become a trend.  It can ruin a great show.

They’re also TOTALLY downplaying the way rural Japanese would be freaking out over a white man, and totally unaccepting of a strangely-dress Japanese talking white man talk.  In the Edo period, wearing the wrong clothes or wrong colors could get you shunned, and maybe attacked as disloyal.  There should be a little more difficulty there...in fact a LOT more.  But then I suppose this is a comic book, and the background players in every comic generally just accept crazy shit happening in front of them.

Looks like the Toxic Twins are lost in Mey-hico...bad for the Mexicans.  And Peter’s a full-on superhero now.  I mean, he instinctually turned to help when he could have run away to save himself, and of course he’s frigging near unstoppable by a normal human.  I think that everything that happened lends creedence to the teory that he needs to remember and know how to use each power he takes, like Sylar needs to “see” how it works?  Lost memory meant lost powers until it started to come back.  Hopefully his regular memory will return soon as well.

Big mystery: What the blue hell was attacking Mama Petrelli?  And can Peter fight it/him/them?  And where the hell is Sylar?

What the blue hell was attacking Mama Petrelli?

Maybe it was the boogyman? Perhaps the boogyman is the 12’s mistake coming back to haunt them, or kill them? How did mama know Parkman was in her head? Was it just a guess? Or is her power showing?

Agrrrrrgghhhhhh!  The TiVo cut off the last minute or two after Claire did that thing with her thing.  WHAT HAPPENED?

Don’t ask me, I got boned by my DVR the same way. What happened, what were the previews?

Ok, just watched the last chapter on the NBC website. Claire runs outside to catch flyboy and he’s gone, Papa Shuresh’s book is on her drive way and Mr, Muggles is looking up and barking, but Claire just picks up the book and doesn’t look up.

How did mama know Parkman was in her head? Was it just a guess? Or is her power showing?

That’s easy.  She thought about how the murder was an act of revenge, and Parkman out of the blue then asks if it was about revenge.  So she just put it together pretty simply.  Not knowing about special abilities it wouls seem odd, but since she knows about those kind of people its not a surprise to her.

Like, why can Hiro ride a horse?  AT ALL?

That’s probably the only complaint of yours I could offer some reasonable explanation for.  Hiro idolizes Kensei and has a rich father.  His dad probably wouldn’t allow him to take sword training as a kid, but probably could spend money to let Hiro take some horseback riding.

Its at least somewhat feasible.  Would have been better if he was flailing around on it though.

Green Lantern#4  Posted by Green Lantern United States on 10/02 at 05:47 PM -

I agree with the above.  As for the newspaper article, how do you know it was from his town?  Maybe Parkman sent it to him, since he was leading the investigation.  Its possible.  And/Or Sulu was a very wealthy international buisness man, well respected and Japanese.  Even in the real world it would be a huge AP story picked up all over.  Just think if Don Trump jumped off a building, it would be on the front page everywhere.  The only thing I can’t explain, the White guy in Japan.  However, it did seem to work for Shogun, The Last Sammuri, and Vanilla Ice.

Just think if Don Trump jumped off a building, it would be on the front page everywhere.

But they wouldn’t show his splattered body on the concrete.

Spoiler:
The toe regrew fast. And classmate who can fly saw it all as he was creepily looking in the window. Claire ran outside to see him.. but he was hovering overhead and only the dog saw.

I was vastly amused by Hiro wearing Kensai’s armor and facing down the goon squad.

“Why would I need a sword… when I have all of yours?”

But yeah… unless they’re in some corner of Japan that’s less cranky about foreigners—hell, maybe Hokkaido or wherever the Ainu live—the presence of a gaijin wandering around Japan is a bit of an anachronism. If I’m not mistaken, Japan was flat out closed to foreigners until Admiral Perry’s mission, with one exception: the trading port of Nagasaki.

In theory, Kensai could have some form of official ‘pass’ that lets him move around without getting attacked on sight—heck, he’s got full samurai armor, maybe someone higher up the food chain owed him a couple favors.

Since Peter would by default have his mother’s power too(if she even has one), it’s probably empathy based since that’s pretty much what Peter has. It’s likely that she doesn’t have one, but her vast experience with the supers gave her a clue as to what was going on.

My guess is Mama P. got attacked by Kristen Bell’s character since she is rumored to have electricity as a power and her arc is tied with the P family. 13 episodes means she’s going to be in most of the season, so…

You know, after talking with one of my friend’s about Heroes today, we were discussing Kensei’s power.  You realize that with his power, the legend of him cutting out his own heart can now be 100% true.

#10  Posted by matthean United States on 10/02 at 08:57 PM -

And you can scratch Mama P. not having a power and Kristen Bell’s character being the attacker. Um, yeah. Episode 3 seems decent, but 4 and 5 looks to be really the ones that put things in motion. Remember episode 5 in season 1 was where we got Future Hiro and was the episode that sold me on the show. Looks like a similar build up.

I don’t understand something. As intelligent and as trained as HRG is, you’d think he could hook up some kind of home security system. At least something more efficient than a bunch of tin cans on a string or dry leaves scattered around the yard…

Hell, those intruder lights that come on when someone enters the yard are SIMPLE, and commercially available.

But… nothing. Not even an external webcam to make sure there isn’t a surveillance van a few houses down.

Just how paranoid is this guy?

Being careful without looking like being careful?  Security but blending in.

He has been sloppy before as well.

Kring needs to learn though, especially after the questions came up about why peter couldn’t fly himself away before exploding and his response was “you’re not supposed to ask that,” or along those lines.  The fan base he is dealing with is savy, observant and doesn’t want to be pandered to and told just to “accept it.” We’ll accept a lot but it has to be somewhat reasonable.

and how could Hiro see with out his glasses....
as for a Gaijin in Japan, he MUST have impressed someone high up or have balls of steel..

anyone notice the realistic portrayal of the Mexico Guatemalan border… LOL… if the US pulled thaht shit there be protests for months!

But he isn’t showing the first level of care. Hell, they don’t even keep the fuckin’ curtains shut!

Well I’ve got to be missing something, here.
I saw the last episode of season 1. I remember it fairly well.
...and I just don’t recall everyone’s memories getting erased. So dubya tee eff?
Why don’t any of these characters seem to be remembering each other, like, at all?

Not only have they all met, but they were almost all there during the final knock-down drag-out with Sylar.
So why is it they can look each other in the eye, and not have even a glimmer of recognition, all of a sudden?
(With the exception of Noah, Suresh and The Haitian all seeming to still know each other?)

I mean, I know Nathan has got that 40lb. beard, now… but he’s still the former big-name politico from TV, right?
Dis ain’t no Soopa-man comic, folks… throwing on a pair of glasses or a silly beard doesn’t instantly make your identity undiscernable, does it?

#16  Posted by Buzzion United States on 10/03 at 12:10 AM -

Artmonkey,

I take it you’re talking about Nathan and Parkman meeting?  Gotta remember your timing.  Parkman was already shot and on the ground probably in complete shock when Nathan showed up.  So except for meeting in Texas when Peter was in jail they really have had no interaction.

Nathan also isn’t hiding his identity.  I think that along with his divorce from his wife he chose not to accept his seat in congress.  So that’s a quick drop to obscurity.  I mean unless you’re a political junkie could most people identify their congressmen?  How about the guy who didn’t win?

Oh and concerning Tivo cutting things off?  Couldn’t you set the tivo to record the halfhour of the show right after, so it catches any possible overlap?  Or will it just cut off and then start recording at the exact start of the next show.

Best thing to do is just go into season pass and tell it to start recording 5 minutes before the show and 5 minutes after.

Hiro on the horse isn’t that big of a deal since, and I believe someone else already said this, he’s a rich kid. As geeky as he is now, I’m sure he was riding around on horses pretending to be Kensai when he was a kid. Seems pretty plausible. As for riding and fighting without glasses, I’ve got nothing. Future Hiro didn’t wear glasses so maybe his vision isn’t THAT bad. Can’t remember any time in the series that it was an issue…

One big glaring problem in this episode other than the ones before: Why are the irish guys beating Peter up for hours asking who he is if they have his name, credit cards, etc...? I’d say they’re bluffing with the info to get him going along with their plan but… pulling an amnesiac’s name out of thin air? What gives?

All in all though, Pretty damn entertaining.

My DirecTV HR20 HD-DVR didn’t have a problem. :)

Christian#19  Posted by Christian United States on 10/03 at 08:52 PM -

I’m with Drum. HRG should at least have some form of external security goen.  Hell, I’m not on the run from an evil multinational corporation (or so ya’ll know) and I have a security camera. But then, I am a tad paranoid…

And why do people NEVER look up? The focken dog is goen crazy, and she’s just standen there.

There’s definitely an originality problem in the making.

1) Who here didn’t predict that Hiro would play Kensei?

2) Who here didn’t predict that the sick patient in Haiti would be...well, The Haitian?

3) OK, the Kensei’s having a power was a bit of a surprise, but it’s a repeat power.

4) And Claire’s Official New Season Pseudo-Boyfriend To Replace Last Season’s Pseudo-Boyfriend has a repeat power, as well.

Green Lantern#21  Posted by Green Lantern United States on 10/04 at 12:09 PM -

Who says people can’t have the same power?  To some degree it actually makes sense. If there are some many people with the gene markers and more popping up everyday, of course you are going to have some people with the same gift.  Every show has a level of predicability if you really watch closely.  However, Hiro becoming Kensi and Kensi being de-mystified for Hiro will probally be an important part of his development as a strong Hero for the future.  As you grow up we all have those moments when we realize our Heros are more human than we thought when we were younger.  Its an important part of growing up, and that is excatly what Hiro is doing now.  He is working on becoming future Hiro, maybe just not as dark.

I disagree somewhat.  It may have a minor effect on Hiro, but not to that point.  And what I expect to happen is another bit of formulaic standard.  And just because its somewhat standard doesn’t mean I don’t like it or am disappointed when it occurs.  Kensei will undergo what I can best describe as the “Han Solo Paradigm.” The hard rough out for only himself scoundrel actually has a pure heart buried under his skin, and it takes the person with the belief in what is good and right to get him to see that he can let that pure heart show and do what he knows deep down is the right thing.

You believe Kensei will show Hiro that real Heroes are more like regular people than we want.  I believe that Hiro will make Kensei become the Hiro he believes him to be.

Green Lantern#23  Posted by Green Lantern United States on 10/04 at 04:53 PM -

I agree, but I think it becomes a combination of the two.  Kensi learns from Hiro to be a Hero, and Hiro learns from Kensi.  You could see the change in Hiro as soon as he put the armor on and decided to play Kensi and he did a good job of it.
I am still waiting for a viable explantion of white sammuri in 1600’s Japan.  I figure he at least had to kick someones ass at some point.

I didn’t say they couldn’t.  I just said it was a sign of an originality problem.  And the problem #4 that I listed was two problems.

I’m sure they’ll give me a “Whoa, WTF” moment eventually.  But it hasn’t happened in the first two episodes yet.
