Heroes - Kindred

Spoilers below!

OK, explain the following:

- Why Peter didn’t just take the box *again*.
- Why the half-ugly, poorly-accented Irish girl is enough to make a dude with mysterious powers and memory loss not give two shits about who the hell his is?
- Why force-choking a guy isn’t the coolest god-damned power ever.  :)
- Why they couldn’t find ONE FUCKING IRISH ACTOR for any of the Irish roles.  By “Irish” I mean someone born in Ireland with an actual Irish accent, not some piss-poor Lucky fucking Charms impression.

- Also, please feel free to come up with theories about why Sylar has no powers.  The surgeries?  Something else?  The illusion-maker is still fooling him as a test to see what he’d do?

- Claire and Clark Kent - WHATEVER.  Boring.  Sorry, but that angle bores me to tears.  I know, it’s necessary in order to set up Claire versus HRG, which I think is what Isaac’s painting was foretelling.  I think in Isaac’s vision, Claire and Superboy attack HRG because she loves Superboy, and HRG attacked him, etc.

- Mo-hindering the show - I really hope one of the paintings shows him dying.

- Maya & her curebrother - starting to bore me.  It’s cute that they’re now in Claire’s stolen car with the American kid.  I guess.  I mean, I know that some mutations will be bad, not everyone gets a cool power like lightning or fire or telekenisis.  I guess I am tired of watching them making their run for the border.  Show me one segment of their progress and move on to some of the others already.

- Nice to see Jessikki and Micah.  DL didn’t make it.  Poor guy.  Also, mad love to Uhura.

- Hiro & Kensei = awesome.  Sometimes I wish the whole show could just about them and Sylar and Peter, and maybe Matt Parkman.  And Ando, of course.  Not a lot to say about Hiro & Kensei, really...it’s pretty standard Jiminy Cricket meets Cyrano, hero-gets-the-girl stuff, but the actors make it great to watch.

Correct me if I’m wrong Jim, but at the end of the first season of Heroes weren’t you saying that Parkman should be written out of the show?  Why the change of heart?

JimK#2  Posted by JimK United States on 10/09 at 05:29 PM -

I dunno.  He grew on me.  I like the actor, too.

I wouldn’t cry if he got killed, but I kinda like him now.

Jim don’t forget the way the first season started.  It began very slow for many of the characters.  And I think the turning point was the subway.  But even after that it still had a slow build for other characters.  And yeah Super-boy sucks, and that’s a painting I really hope doesn’t come true, or at least isn’t the real HRG.

Maya and Alejandro are this season’s Ted Sprague for me. Don’t care about them, could give a shit what happens, but I’ve got a feeling they’re going to be a catalyst for whatever the main arc of the season is.

As far as Peter not opening the box, I can kind of understand his reluctance. I mean, For all he knows he could actually be a guy that’s JUST LIKE SYLAR. Who wants to find that shit out? Not clear on why the tattoo faded myself. When a tattoo heals the ink is left behind… Right?

I doubt HRG will bite it in the end. Just because something’s painted definently does NOT mean it will come true. Check out Mendez’s floor for proof of that. Also, I don’t think the painting necessarily shows Claire being an accomplice to his death. The paintings for all their graphic depictions of death almost always leave out the most important details.

Ah but Mendez’s floor painting did come true.  Just as the painting of Nathan in the Whitehouse came true.  The thing is that it came true, and Hiro and Ando went forward into that future, and then altered the past.  But the bomb did still go off in New York.  So everything he has painted has come true.  Can you think of any painting shown that didn’t occur?

They leave out the important details, but so far they have all occured.  Just not the way we anticipated.

Well, yes and no.  Tattoo inks generally contain some kind of salts and/or metals, and they are delivered by wounding the skin then staining it.  I would expect his body to reject that just like it rejected the bullet.

Now, why it turned to the symbol before it went away?  Easy: it’s a comic book and stuff like that happens all the time.

For some reason I’m OK with that, but the fact that Peter didn’t just walk away when he knew he had the power - before he fell in love with the half-ugly fake Irish girl and even knew there was a box - bugs the shit out of me.

Buzzion, rather than say the painting didn’t come true, how about this: The paintings are a prediction of the future, which becomes the present.  That present can be altered, not just by going back in time, but by altering choices in the present in order to affect the future.  So...painting can be “beaten.”

Did that make any frigging sense.

Can you think of any painting shown that didn’t occur?

Yes. The ground-level explosion causing the collapse of massive buildings so prominently figured throughout the first season. Hiro saw it when he went to the future (Election Day+1, IIRC). Isaac painted it across the floor of his studio. Yet the explosion didn’t happen that way. It happened at high altitude (and since Nathan has no healing capability, it was probably Nathan getting him to altitude and then launching him in a high ballistic arc, or Peter absorbing enough flying ability to keep going under his own steam) and no buildings were destroyed.

I have to wonder how the government explained away the night just disappearing for what must have been half the Eastern Seaboard?

Why they couldn’t find ONE FUCKING IRISH ACTOR for any of the Irish roles.

Because they are already signed up under The Great Britain Thespian Full Employment Act (aka, the Harry Potter movie franchise)?

But it did happen at ground level.  Hiro saw it happen.  He even went to the future and saw the aftermath.  Remember not only did Isaac paint the explosion in New York, he also drew the comic of Hiro going into the future, and then going back in time and drawing Sylar.  So they have all come to pass.  The details aren’t just how we expect them.  You are thinking too “real world” linearly.  Think linear to Hiro.

The explosion happened, just not in the universe in which the TV show is set.

Green Lantern#12  Posted by Green Lantern United States on 10/10 at 10:34 AM -

Can we call Peter, Darth Petrelli now??  That was freakin cool! “I find your lack of faith, distrubing”

My theory on Sylar was pretty much what yours was, he didn’t kill her, he is still trapped in her illusion.  If this isn’t true and he did kill her, she was a freakin idot!  I so totally saw that coming.  Beyond that, I got nothin.

What if there is a way to un-lock the memories of the Haitian?  Maybe there is something in the box that will trigger all D.P.’s memories to come back.

Anyway, love this show.  Anyone still watching Chuck or Journeyman?  I really enjoy Chuck, hope it sticks around and they keep it fresh.

erased memory?

Candace can make him see whatever she wants him to see.  So is it possible that he does have the full use of his powers?  But She’s just making him see that he doesn’t?  He can still hear the clock ticking, so he obviously has that ability still.  And that is one of his abilities that does not manifest externally so it can’t be blocked.

@ buzzion

also a sound theory

Well, yeah. The paintings do come true. Unless, that is, you take the information contained in the painting and change the situation. Remember the painting of Peter dead in front of the High School? Hiro and the T Rex? And of course the floor painting? The paintings are obviously only things that COULD happen, not absolutely will.

#17  Posted by Buzzion United States on 10/10 at 12:17 PM -

Remember the painting of Peter dead in front of the High School?

Peter was lying there dead in front of the high school.

Hiro and the T Rex?

Hiro stood before a T-Rex with a sword.

And of course the floor painting?

And the bomb did go off in New York at ground level.

The paintings are obviously only things that COULD happen, not absolutely will.

But so far everything in them has happened.  Now obviously the future is not written in stone because they have changed it.  But all of Isaac’s paintings have occurred.

#18  Posted by supercore Germany on 10/11 at 12:04 AM -

Yeah, But there was no context to the paintings. That’s my point is all. Without context they’re virtually useless. Nathan didn’t want Peter to go to Texas bec/ he saw him dead in the painting. If Peter hadn’t gone to Texas though he wouldn’t have gotten his regeneration ability and would definently be dead by now from Sylar. Context is everything and prophecy is ALWAYS out of context.

That’s part of the appeal though.  You have these pictures, and you know they are going to come true.  The context is missing so it leaves you to speculate.  For instance seeing HRG standing over a dead cheerleader.  It came true, but it wasn’t claire and HRG isn’t the one who did it.  So it becomes a question of how will the events around the painting play out?  And can you actually stop them from happening?  Will the attempts to stop them cause them to come true?

- Why the half-ugly, poorly-accented Irish girl is enough to make a dude with mysterious powers and memory loss not give two shits about who the hell his is?

Buggin’ me too, she ain’t no Fiona from Burn Notice. What is up with Peter? Did he lose his memory of his balls too? Is he scared, confused, stupid? Cool powers to make a Sith envious and he is still sitting there? Open the box.

HRG can’t die, he’s too good a bad/good/bad guy. Superboy may be saving Claire by taking her away from the scene in the picture. Is superboy part of “The Company” and helped orchestrate HRG guys death? He latched on to Claire pretty fucking quick, like he already knew. Was he waiting for her or does he have a Molly power to identify Heroes? He looks too much like the dude from Smallville, but it’s sort of cute.

Matt is protecting Molly so he has a purpose now.

Jessikki will just fuck up again. I’m not really into her, but go Ohura!

Virus and cure need to go somewhere in the story, didn’t catch they got into Claire’s stolen car.

Sylar, bastard. I am hoping he is in extreme pain and has lost his powers and the ability to accumulate them, but we’ll see. Maybe he used them up? Candace may still be in control. He certainly is in BFE if she’s not.

artmonkey#21  Posted by artmonkey United States on 10/11 at 01:32 PM -

Allright, here’s my $.02…

Buzz is right on about Sylar. He’s being held in a
“company” facility, being studied (and, likely, brainwashed, slowly) through use of Candace’s illusions. In all likelihood, his powers are still very much intact, but he’s not aware of them.

On the HRG painting; I’m pretty sure this is another example of the paintings being “out of context”.
My gut says it also has something to do with Candace’s abilities, or something similar… shapeshifter, perhaps?
Check out the look on Clare’s face in the painting. It doesn’t look as much grief-stricken or even angry as it does disgusted, in a shocked kind of way. Kind of like an “oh my god, what the *&$# just happened?!?” type look, no?

Last, as for the “half-ugly fake Irish” chick…

Her name is Katie Carr. Any of you with children may or may not remember her from “Dinotopia"… which is kind of fitting, as, with that cranium, she sort of resembles a Pachycephalosaurus.

Yes, she’s fairly gruesome looking. That’s not a forehead. It’s an eighthead, at least.

....BUT… it may surprise you greatly to know that she was born and raised in London.
I know, right? How screwy it that? She’s like, next-freakin’-door to Ireland most of her life, and still can’t swing the brogue without a handle?
How sad.
