Fuck the FCC
I wish these fucking assholes would stick to regulating the god-damned spectrum and stop trying to be arbiters of decency.
The Federal Communications Commission has warned Time Warner Inc. and Comcast Corp. that unwanted conditions could be imposed on their proposed $17.6 billion acquisition of Adelphia Communications Corp. if they fail to adopt measures to curb the proliferation of sexually explicit programming on their pay TV systems, according to company sources.
Faced with what some are describing as an ultimatum, the nation’s two leading cable TV providers have sought to satisfy FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin’s demands by pressuring the industry to come to a consensus, said these sources, who requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the regulatory approval process.
Martin publicly called last week for all cable operators to offer channels ‘’a la carte’’ instead of in bundled packages, reversing the agency’s position under Martin’s predecessor, Michael Powell. A la carte pricing would allow subscribers to have only the channels they wanted.
Also in recent weeks, sources say, Martin has made clear in closed-door meetings that he would like Time Warner and Comcast to help advance his anti-indecency agenda.
In case no one noticed...cable TV is an opt-in, pay system, one which you have to make an effort to bring into your home. It is not the airwaves, it is NOT part of the public trust. What Martin wants to do is the actual real definition of censorship. “Indecent” (read: interesting in any way) material is not allowed on broadcast TV, and trying to remove it, through governmental pressure, removes the material from broadcast. The internet is not a viable means of television delivery yet...therefore, he is not simply advocating the removal of an avenue of content delivery, he is killing the content entirely.
That is censorship defined.

What the fuck has happened to the First Amendment?

The whole point that the Government “owns” the airwaves - and can limit the number of players - is as much a grab of power as anything tried in one of those banana republics.
What’s next? Trying to control content on the Internet? There’ll be blood in the streets if they keep this shit up…

You know what’s funny though with the a la carte option that the FCC proposed? They did it because of all the people claiming about getting smut on their tv, even though they don’t have to have cable or satellite. But with the a la carte option, all the religious groups realized “No one will buy our channels to watch then.” They would lose money if that happened so the religious nuts are actually opposed to that option.
