CBS has lost their minds

I’m baffled.

CBS News has axed a news producer who cut into prime-time programming Wednesday night to report the death of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The staffer, a female senior producer for CBS’s overnight newscast Up to the Minute, broke in to CSI: N.Y. shortly before 11 p.m. with the report, outraging viewers who missed the end of the crime drama.

CBS apologized for the interruption Thursday, saying an “overly aggressive” staffer “jumped the gun on a report that should have been offered to local stations for their late news.”

Waitaminutehere.

CBS’ news department works for five years on a story dedicated to trying to destroy the reputation of the man serving as POTUS.  In an effort to sway an election, they rush to air with forged documents they had not vetted and were warned against using by their own experts.  Dan Rather, allegedly one of the most trusted newsmen in the world before this incident (if you weren’t paying attention), goes on the OFFENSIVE and refuses to admit a problem long after the documents are proved to be frauds, and to this very day we still have no satisfactory explanation for the entire mess.

But the fired a news producer instantly and apologized for kicking the last four minutes of CSI: N.Y.?

WHAT THE HELL?

WHAT PLANET DO THEY LIVE ON?

P.A. Yes I do feel a little better.  Enough to be outraged and astounded at this ridiculousness, anyway.

CSI is the best-rated show on a terrible network. Possibly the only rated show.

Your outrage isn’t inaccurate, it just doesn’t address itself to what a pathetic SITUATION CBS and its news dpt. in particular are in.

And THAT just hardly needs making fun of, it’s so sad.

I couldn’t agree more. How important, really, is CSI? I guess pretty important, if you consider advertising dollars, but don’t the networks have enough humility to recognize the importance of Arafat’s death when compared to an overdramatic TV show?

I was thinking about this as I watched the news today. Bush was meeting with Tony Blair, the effects of Arafat’s death were unfolding, our attack on Fallujah was still in progress, and what was the #1 story?

The Scott Peterson trial.

It’s sickening, really, where our national priorities lie.

it really DID suck for those of us who tivo the show and don’t watch it until 24 hours after already knowing that arafat died, and 55 minutes in, they cut to the news i already saw.

in other words, i blame tivo ;)

for the record, had i been watching it live, i’d expect for them to cut in asap.  overly aggressive?  ~*W*~

No matter what political believe one holds, losing the last few minutes of a fictional television series is not as offensive as trying to sway an election with fake data.

One resulted in the firing of a news producer and an immediate apology.  One resulted in a stall effort, no firings and no substantial apology or admission of intent by anyone involved.  And that is just insane.

I don’t care about the show.  I care about CBS’ reaction to the two incidents.  It’s so out of balance.

i absolutely agree it’s out of balance.  how long do you think it’ll be till we hear about the wrongful termination lawsuit?

my opinion on what was behind the first incident is different than yours, however.  i belive it was “ratings whore gone terribly and grossly and disgustingly irresponsibly wrong” not “attempt to sway the election,” but we are going to have to agree to disagree on that since i’m not going to debate it… either way, it’s inconsequential because i think the fact that it was for ratings alone makes it even WORSE, because he didn’t even have an agenda other than greed.

ANYWAY, i digress.  point being is that i do in fact agree with you that i found it quite a bit more irresponsible than cutting into the last 5 minutes of a tv show.

i also hope your realize i was kidding about my disappoinment in missing the last 5 minutes of the show.  ;)

this is a VRWC of course, CSI is created and produced by jerry bruckheimer a republican, who gave money to bush, so clearly we know who is at fault..President bush, and i have the documents hot off the press to prove it.

Tough break for that producer. Fox News should hire him. Dan Rather will be next. Could you imagine Rather on Fox News? Ha!

On the one hand, it WAS the very last few minutes of the show, where things are generally wrapped up and finalized and so on. They could have waited three minutes, but then that would have meant interrupting a commercial for the news. Can’t have that.
On the other hand, CSI: NY is the suckiest of the CSI shows. The people all sound like idiots because they have the least-intelligent sounding New York accents imaginable, and they’re not very good CSIs. It’s like watching a CSI department staffed entirely by Sarah Sidles.
On the third hand, I think part of the reason CBS is pissed is that NBC took the opportunity to really needle them, putting up a summary of the show and the missed minutes on their news and their website. That’s probably what REALLY pissed CBS off.
