Cafe DuMonde
Me too, Lee, me too.
I was just sitting here thinking about Cafe Dumond in New Orleans. I can’t remember how many times I’ve sat there at 5am, drunk off my ass, drinking coffee and eating beignets, with Jackson Square on one side and the Mississippi River on the other. It’s probably totally gone by now.
I was saying to my wife, how could a place like that even survive? The kitchen itself is mostly open to the air. Then I thought about the market, and all those places along St. Charles...Oh, and once Lee, my now brother-in-law and I seperated from our friends who were going shopping and we wandered. We were determined to get off the tourist tit and find something local. We found this shithole bar that served the best gumbo we ever ate. Never found that place again, but I bet it’s gone.
*UPDATE*
After Drum’s comment, I popped around and lo and behold, at his site I found the motherlink.

You might have yourself a point. So who’s on the scene down there? It’s almost instinctual to say “Red Cross” during a disaster...who would you suggest instead?
P.S. Will call. Still trying to get out from under mountain of email. Send rescue dogs with brandy. :)

See what popularity will bring you?
Any particular brand?

Most of the French Quarter, while still by defaut is below sea level, is higher up that some of the other areas of New Orleans and won’t get submerged quite as quickly (for example, the poorer neighborhoods to the north are about 10’ lower, or more). Though, it is almost a moot point if it got the sugar ripped out of it from the initial storm.

Only one minor nitpick on my end, but I’m not giving another dime or another drop of blood to the Red Cross.
What with stashing money from the 9/11 donations aside “in case another disater occurs”, and barring the playing of patriotic music during an awards ceremony here in SoCal, and several other incidents, I will give through alternative methods, but nothing through the Red Cross.
Not trying to prevent donations to the tragedy, just suggesting other routes that aren’t the Red Cross.
