Brokeback writer says y’all hate the country
Seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN co-writer LARRY MCMURTRY believes urban drama CRASH beat his film to the Best Picture Award, because Academy members discriminate against rural stories. The writer, who has been involved with four Oscar nominated films including THE LAST PICTURE SHOW and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, claims Crash won because it was set in Los Angeles - where most Academy voters live. He explains, “The three rural films (I was involved with) lost. The one urban film, Terms of Endearment, won. “Members of the Academy are mostly urban people. Crash was a hometown movie.”
I saw people saying that Hollywood (HOLLYWOOD!) didn’t give Brokeback the big award because of the gayness. I think that’s a pretty weak argument, but hey...have at it. Make your case.
To claim it was because of the rural setting, though, is a whole other way of walking. A way so silly in it’s....silliness, that we need the Minister of Silly Walks to step in and call an end to the silliness.
Here’s a thought: Brokeback didn’t win because Academy voters didn’t like it as much as they liked something else. Also, it’s about two assholes who lie to their families and cheat on their wives. Who cares if they do it with each other? They’re still lying, cheating scumbags. Maybe THAT made people in Hollywood uncomfortable since half of them are lying, cheating scumbags.
By the way, I assume the three rural projects to which McMurtry refers are Brokeback Mountain, Texasville, and The Evening Star. I can only assume he left the John Cougar Mellencamp vehicle ”Falling from Grace” off the list because let’s face it...John Cougar getting an Oscar? Please. They’ll sooner give one to Kevin Costner.
Oh, wait…

I saw that thing you said...was in Dave’s LJ? That you guys came out of it and John said something like “Was that supposed to make me feel bad?”
That’s why I stopped listening to Rage Against The Machine so often. I got sick of hearing what a bad white person I was. ;)

He’s right, but wrong. Part of it was Crash being set in LA gave the voters a chance to self-fellate themselves on being more aware than anyone else. Not the only reason, but part of it, I’m sure.

I did here the theory about Crash being an upset for best picture over Brokeback because of the gay aspect of it. The reasoning being because of the more conservative members of the academy. The hollywood elite (actors producers directors writers) are definitely on the liberal side of things but they’re not the only ones of the academy voting on best picture. So all the others not being as comfortable with it decided to vote for Crash.
That’s the reasoning I got for it anyways.

buzzion: there is no way in hell i believe brokeback didn’t win because of homosexuality. i just don’t buy it. period.
crash was all “oooo look LOTS of issues… that’s SO hollywood"…
if your theory were correct, i don’t think crash would have won for the very same reason. crash isn’t exactly pandering to the conservatives, imho

jo-jo I didn’t say I believed it either, but jimk did ask for the case of how it could be possible. What I meant when I said more conservative members, what I meant was more conservative than the liberal hollywood elites. I probably should have said “less liberal” instead.

i preface this with “i have not seen this movie yet”
but that’s pretty much what i said when my coworkers were all “wow! brokeback didn’t win!” i said, “well, it’s not like homosexuality is some new concept, and isn’t the movie basically a love story involving men cheating on their wives with a pretty backdrop? this is why i haven’t seen it yet.”
then again, i DID see crash, and don’t get how that won. the acting was great, but the film? i get enough guilt being the daughter of a jewish mommy, i certainly don’t need anyone to TRY to make me feel bad about racism (especially since i’m a P.C. thug ;)
