Bah. Humbug. Bring back the styrofoam Big Mac container
Some Americans are spending the day promoting environmental causes.
It’s America Recycles Day.
Hey, that’s great. Dont get me wrong, some things are blatantly obvious that they should be recycled: paper and soda bottles come to mind. However, the truth is, most states don’t have the capacity to recycle even a fraction of what they collect. Some counties in some states are forced by state or federal law to have a program, but they don’t have a plant, so it all goes to the landfill anyway.
If you’re interested in some data, the EPA has a few charts on recycling by state. Here in Connecticut, we recycle less than 30% of our materials, despite having curbside, lawn waste, bottle deposit and industrial recucling programs. We just don’t have the capacity to handle it. And every time someone tries to build a plant, up step the environmentalists to argue *against* it, of all things, because no matter where you build it, the habitat of some spotted triple-necked throg’s bellied one-eyed thingamabob will be disturbed.
They’re so picky in CT, I can’t figure out what the hell to put in the recycling bin. Every time I think I have it figured, the bin comes back half full because the recyclers refuse to take my refuse.
