A change

The other day, Steve from HogOnIce wrote this.  Today he wrote this.  Skip the pepper talk, although I find it interesting as I like to grow stuff and cook and whatnot.  The part I want you to see is the part that refers to the conservative blogging stuff.

Now, this is not the first time Steve has written on this subject.  Nor is it the first time I have agreed with him.  Pajamas Media screwed up the whole right side of the blog world.  Right wing bloggers are so busy competing and fighting over petty differences that they cannot form anything resembling the united front of the left part of the blog world.  Forget that, though.  I don’t want to just be part of some side of a battle.  What I would like is to stop being treated like a red-headed stepchild by *both* sides, but more by the one I’m supposed to be on, ya know what I mean?  Originally I picked the URL due to the wordplay of me being right but also being on the right, and I was doing it in part to show solidarity with the right-o-sphere...but to hell with ‘em.  The whole A-list can kiss my ass, and the B-list can get in line behind ‘em.  I only get love from smaller bloggers who aren’t worried about their place in the frigging Technorati or Ecosystem lists anyway.  There is no movement.  Online, at least, the right has failed and is dying faster than Rosie O’Donnell’s movie career.

On top of all that, I wonder how many people stay away from this site just because of the URL and/or name.

And I don’t feel comfortable with it anymore, it just doesn’t seem to fit me.

I’m thinking of going back.  Back to “Starkthoughts.” with a .com at the end.  I’ll take the hit from Google, rebuild my pagerank, all that.  I’ll redirect right-thoughts.us to the new domain.  But I think maybe I’d be better off switching back.  And it’s not the first time I have felt that way.

What do you all think of this idea?  Any opinion will be welcome...let me know if you think it’s a crazy, stupid idea.  I am really, really leaning toward doing this...if anything above should be given more weight it’s that I just do not feel right...no pun intended...with this URL and blog name anymore.  If someone can give me a really good reason not to do change back to Starkthoughts, I will absolutely listen, but it’s gonna have to be an awfully good reason.

On the one hand, there were indeed times when I wanted to show one of my friends with more liberal leanings something on the page, and I worried that I’d have to deal with some snark about the URL. (But most of these people were actually assholes and I shouldn’t have been worried about their opinions anyway, elitist shits.) On the other, I really like the URL. It’s extremely easy to remember, in great part because it’s both simple and different. It’s unique and I think rather cool.

But in the end, it’s all you. It’s your site and your blog, man. I don’t give a shit if you call it “Fucky McFuckerson Says How He Fucked Your Mom, Yeah, You Right There, Your Mom Fucker”, I’m still gonna read it. You’ve gotta look up at the URL and think not of politics or meaning, but “Is this me? Does this make me happy?”

Just look at it. When you look of right-thoughts.us, do you think of yourself? Is there any faint affection for it as what you’ve labored under these past years? Are you annoyed with the URL, or just some dicks that should share political values with you?

Because if anyone’s going to snort and blow you off just because of the URL, fuck ‘em. If they can’t even take five minutes to skim over the actual contents of the messages on the front page, screw it, 98% chance that they’re not the sort of commenter/reader you want anyway.

It’s your house, man. Hang whatever you want over the doorway.

Doesn’t matter what the site’s named, I’ll come anyway.  In the meantime, I’ll work on the google stuff.

www.starkthoughts.com
“Badass Coffee”
“Battlestar Galactica”
“Ninjas”
“Boobs”

Jim, Rann’s got it right when he says “fuck ‘em”.
You’re going to have those who object to the name just because of what they *think* your politics are because of it.
But are these people you want hanging around, anyway?
I say it’s a fantastic mechanism for culling the herd of it’s more idiotically judgmental element.

Aside from that, it’s elegant, simple and to the point; the point you intended from the get-go.

You can change the name, of course, and I doubt anyone will protest, much. After all, as Rann said, it’s your joint.
But whether it’s because of sniping from simpletons on the left who can’t distinguish a book from it’s cover, or erudite mouth breathers from the right who believe you should fall in line with their narrow, personal political definitions,
you would be doing yourself, and your ideologies, a disservice by cow-towing and giving them dominion over what should be called “right” or “left”.

...why should they decide what “right” thoughts are, anyway? Y’know?

Screw ‘em. It’s your definition.
Own it, brutha-man.

As for the right getting their web-asses handed to them… all I can say, is, it’s really easy to have a united front when you’re all lined up neatly on the leftmost fringe.
The reason the right has problems being ideologically united is because we tolerate, or even encourage, individualism and independent thought. We don’t have to all agree.
We don’t necessarily want to all agree.
Ours is the big tent, regardless of shottenfreud.
I say hell.. all the better. If that costs us internet credibility, so be it.
What the hell is internet credibility, anyway?
This is the home of MoveOn.org. It’s not like it’s a habitat for truth and integrity.

what exactly are you worried about?  It isn’t clear to me based on your post.  Is it:

- being confused as a member of the vast right wing conspiracy? Not likely if anyone spends 2 minutes reading

- # of hits? I dunno how to answer that one

- being on a side of the right vs. left?  If you don’t give a shit about that than why waste time sweating the URL, if people are too stupid to read the subtext - why would you want them commenting here?

I’m with Rann on this (even though he has his head up his ass on the running zombie thing) - I like the name. But...."It’s your thing, do what you wanna do” (*)

(*) The Isley Brothers are rocking the house at the moment

*shrug* you know i’m not here for your political writings ;) although, you ain’t so much on the “right” side of the fence when it comes to many different issues.  i see you sneaking over here with the lefties for a plethora of social topics, but you know that already ;)

i always thought starkthoughts was a better domain just because i *know* you.  but whatevs.  i’ll continue to ignore your conservative leaning posts, and continue to respond to the ignorant people who believe sprinters exist, no matter what the domain. ;)

I like Starkthoughts.com

Sounds pretty damned cool!

Starkthoughts? No offense but that sounds like the title of some emo kid’s Livejournal page.

Keep Right-Thoughts. It just sounds… right. Yeah.

hahah i never thought of it that way ;)

jim, i think the problem some people here may be having is that they haven’t known you as “stark” for 12-13 years like many of your online family has ;)

Jim, I don’t think you should make the change, for no other reason than because you are letting your reactions to what you are imagining those other people are thinking make a decision for you that is ultimately irrelevant.

I named my site after me, because all of the posts I make are about what I find interesting. People come and read and tell me that they either agree with me, or that I missed something or that I’m full of shit.

Whichever, I don’t let their opinions of my opinions (even if it was the proactive response to an imagined reaction) force me into changes just so THEY won’t be confused about who I am or what I believe.

“Not right-wing, just right” explains enough. If they don’t get it, or if they can’t understand by reading a bit, then you’re probably better off without them, and you shouldn’t change just to make them happy.

If you want to change solely because it makes YOU happy, then that is all the justification you need. The rest of humanity? Not until they pay the bills.

Let em start off by saying that I lean way left… I’m practically hippie-liberal.  That being said, I fell upon your blog researching September 11th blogs.  I spent like 4 hours reading your blogs that night.  Your writing is entertaining and geniunely informative.  starkthoughts, right-thoughts? Doesn’t matter to me, just as long as I get forwarded on to the meaty stuff.

PS I like boobies and steaks too...so maybe you could call it boobiesandsteaks-thoughts.

It’s your party man. As long as I know where the front door is I’ll be back.

Honestly, I enjoy your political rants, but I have enjoyed a lot more of the other stuff as well. I still laugh when I think about your argument with head, the fisking of dumbass tv shows, booies, heh yah, boobies, and I’m a Heroes freak now, thanks for that.

Maybe you should go with Redheadsrock.com, might generate some extra traffic? KnowwhaddaImean! We have the implication of redheads which could be red staters, or lovely redheads of the female persuasion!

SmartPeopleOnIce.com!!!!!

There’s your awfully good reason.

I understand where you’re coming from.  I think whatever you want to name it is fine. It took me a while to come up with snarkbait.com for mine.

witchndigger#14  Posted by witchndigger United States on 09/24 at 08:04 PM -

Jim, it’s you party and we just enjoy the ride. But as along as the enemy uses talking points of the left, shouldn’t we stand up a let everyone know, We are the Right, and we are proud of it. Shouldn’t everyone fight to be the voice of there side. If we think we are correct about a issue why defer to another point of view. Take back the party of lower taxes, smaller government and lower spending. Prove them wrong with facts not feelings. You can change minds that way. sorry about the rant.

In the end it’s your show, with what ever name we’ll be back. The Laughs are to good to be missed.

We regular readers are going to come even if you rename the place donkeyrapingshiteater.com.  We come not because of the name, but because you provide great material.

It’s going to depend on your objectives.  Do you want an apolitical name to attract more readers?  Has your readership actually declined because of the name?  Are you simply fed up with the right wing these days?  These are questions only you can fully consider.  All you can do is weigh your options and ask yourself, “Where do I want this blog to go?”
