Jeep Rescue on the way to showrooms?
Back on 11/16/2004, I blogged about the Jeep Rescue concept vehicle...now it’s closer to reality.
The Jeep Rescue, seen in concept form at the 2004 Detroit Auto Show, is heading for a production line. A four-door addition to the Wrangler family, the Rescue will ride atop a new architecture that will also spawn a new Wrangler two-door and possibly a pickup truck as well.
Compare our profile shots of the prototype with our shots of the concept vehicle and you will see how true to the concept the production model actually is.
Very true...you can see comparisons after the jump.
The shape of the fender flares is identical on both vehicles, although the front and rear bumpers appear to differ slightly. The major differences between the show car and the real thing are found in the shape of the side windows. The concept’s windows each have a dog-leg kink, and the door handles are mounted in the pillars. The prototype’s windows are simply squared-off as on the current Wrangler, and the door handles are of the conventional door-mounted variety.
The new Wrangler lineup should bow in 2007, with the four-door leading the way.
Boy would I love to own this one.

I think I found the problem
Well...I think I know why my car is getting terrible mileage.
Today when I left the pool, I got in the car and turned the key. As I was hooking up the ipod, I heard a screech that quickly built in intensity and they a plume of steam/smoke came out from under the hood.
Then the stink of freon and hot air came in through the vents!
Looks like the A/C is kaput. Makes sense in retrospect, the REALLY bad mileage started when the temperature rose. So now I gota take it in...I’m going to have them just take care of everyting as long as it’s in. Tune-up, all that. Screw it, in for a penny…

Gas mileage
I have noticed a significant decrease in my gas mileage (1992 Taurus, 3.8 liter V6) over the last few months, so I finally started tracking it. It’s 17 MPG average. According to this site, others are getting 26.
Should I be worried? What can cause this kind of a dropoff?

She’s baaa-aack
Svetlana (that’s my car’s name, I’ll explain in a minute) is back in her home.
*UPDATE* - She drove great today. Short jaunt on the highway, just ten miles each way, but it’s like a whole new car ride-wise!

At least I’m getting my money’s worth
So my car has been in the shop since yesterday at 8:30 AM. Big clunky noise when I get on or off the gas or go over a bump, a dip in the road, whatever. Last time I heard a noise that loud that vibrated the body like this one did, it was a busted motor mount and my engine was rising up in the compartment and almost touching the hood from the inside.
Yoinks. So I took it in just in case the motor mount somehow had snapped again. At 4 PM they finally told me that couldn’t figure it out all day but they now had it narrowed down to struts and/or strut plates. Makes sense. Fixed price repair...$799 for the front two or $999 for all four. Well, only an idiot would pay $799 and then probably have to pay it again in a year or two to get the rears done, so...$999 it is.
They physically started removing the struts yesterday at about 4:30 PM. They close at 7 PM. It’s now almost 1 PM. They open at 8 AM, and I called about an hour after that and they guy said they were working on it since they opened. So...7.5 hours so far. That’s $637.50 at the hourly rate before parts.
It’s funny, I was getting all “Where’s my damn car” until I realized how much labor was going into it. Now I’m like “Don’t finish until 4 PM! I want to come out ahead on the whole labor/payment ratio!”
1992 Taurus, BTW. Are the struts a bitch to fix on those or are they sipping lattes on my dime? :)

Oh.My.God.
I want this car so bad I can taste it.

*UPDATE*
I keep staring at it, imagining taking a plane ride down to Florida, meeting the owner, talking about the car over a nice steak, handing over payment, driving it back up north and gliding it into the driveway like it was meant to be there. I can hear the engine idling with that throaty rumble with that high note the old Dodges had.
If anyone has 30+ grand they’d like to give me, I’m accepting donations.

Now THAT’S a truck!
Damn. I wonder if my driveway would collapse under the weight of the Smart Truck III?

Kinder, gentler Hummer
It’ll sell well among soccer moms and rappers.

Unveiled recently at a Anaheim, Calif., auto show, the H3 retains the unique look of its larger siblings but gets an average 20 miles per gallon on the highway—almost double what the biggest Hummer gets—and is shorter than a Honda Accord.
Specifically, it is 16.9 inches shorter than a full-size H2 with a tailgate-mounted spare tire, six inches lower in height and 6.5 inches narrower with a 220- horsepower five-cylinder engine that also is used in the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado compact pickup trucks.
Whether the changes will be enough to satisfy some detractors remains to be seen.
Feh. I’m kind of off the Hummer thing now, unless it was a mil surplus Hummer that was as tough as the rep makes it seem. I was fooled by the H2 for a short time, but it’s just a big Chevy. Now this is a smaller Chevy.
But they’ll sell a crapload to the NBA! Rollin’ on Deucy-duece spinners, dawg.

2004 Jeep Rescue concept

Not bad...it’s a little Hummer-y, but in a good way. It looks like a real, useful, workhorse version of what the H2 image (not the reality) is supposed to be. I would buy one of these in a heartbeat and feel like I had one of the toughest vehicles ever made. Hopefully the reality will live up to the concept.
There are a bunch of pictures and the DaimerChrysler press release under the “More” link. Each picture pops a new windows with a larger detailed version.
