Charlton Heston Dead at 84

Crossposted from Moorewatch

What a shame.  It’s a shame that such a massive man, in skill, heart and stature, was reduced by Alzheimer.s for so long.  What might be the biggest shame of all is that Heston’s last public appearance will be probably be remembered as Mikey (Moore) presented it in that travesty of a lie-filled, “creatively edited” segment in Bowling For Columbine.

I doubt Michael is capable of shame as a human being anymore - if he ever was - but if he is, I hope that for just a brief moment today, he is ashamed of what he did to Mr. Heston in that film, especially now knowing the man was in the early grips of a disease that confounds, confuses and erases the mind.

So...what was your favorite Heston role?  I must admit, I hated Branaugh’s Hamlet, but I thought Heston was great in it.  I’d have to say that my favorite role of his was George Taylor in Planet of the Apes.  All around, that’s the role of his that stuck with me the most over my life.  He played them all, though.  Marc Antony three or four times, Ben Hur, the Player King, Michelangelo, Jefferson, Richelieu, John the Baptist, Moses, Macbeth, Andrew Jackson...the list goes on and on.

Rest easy, Chuck.  From our cold, dead hands now.  We’ll keep those damn dirty apes at bay.

Candy is more profitable if you factor in the guns and the cops

You know what I love about this story of children dealing candy that has been banned in their school?

With candy sales banned on school campuses, sugar pushers are the latest trend at local schools. Backpacks are filled with Snickers and Twinkees for all sweet tooths willing to pay the price.

“It’s created a little underground economy, with businessmen selling everything from a pack of skittles to an energy drink,” said Jim Nason, principal at Hook Junior High School in Victorville.

I did this in 1977-78.

I attended Dr. Edwin Weeks Elementary in second grade.  As you can see, it’s an educational shithole.  It was a shithole then and it was brand spanking new.  I was bussed there from half-way across the city, and I was one of about 30 white kids.  It was the advent of the modern “progressive” school in Syracuse, NY.  35 to a class (although now it’s down to 15), force kids to ride a bus for an hour, all that crap.  I lived across the street from a elementary school, to which I went for K and 1st, but then the city decided to become “progressive.” It was entirely stupid.  My original school was half white, half black with loads of other people...we lived in a poor-but-mixed neighborhood.  The concept behind busing - in part anyway - was to expose white kids to minority culture and minorities to white culture.  We were already doing that, but some moronic administrator drew lines on a map, and that meant I had to get up at 6:00 just to get the damn bus at 7:00 so I could make it to school by 8:15.

ANYWAY...candy was not allowed.  So every morning I got off the bus, ran full speed to the little store a block away from the school, bought as many Now & Later packs as I could afford, and sold them individually - by which I mean I broke the packs open and would sell you a single Now & Later in your choice of flavor - all day.  The first day - the money for which I stole from my mother’s purse - funded the second, and by the end of the first week I was rolling in money.  For a second grader, anyway.

I made so much money that I still had a ton of it when my grandparents (the Irish Catholic ones on my father’s side) paid my tuition to Catholic school to get me out of the worst school in the city.  St. Vincent de Paul (closed now due to lack of students) was where I spent the next three years, but there wasn’t a store nearby...and I couldn’t keep stock in the house as my mother was famous for tearing my room apart looking for a reason to be pissed at me.

Joke’s on her.  I was dealing Star Wars figures and cassette copies of rock and metal albums that the other kids couldn’t get because their parents banned them. Catholic school was awesome. :)

All that was simply to say this; All of this has happened before and all of this will happen again.

Michelle Obama: Godsend.  To the Republican party.

Michelle Obama is the gift that keeps on giving.  I’m not sure who stupidly shoots their mouth off more often, her or Bill Clinton.

As Rachel Lucas (seriously, she’s a genius so start reading her blog already) quoted, Michelle’s latest is this:

“Barack and I were in that position,” she continues. “The only reason we’re not in that position is that Barack wrote two best-selling books…It was like Jack and his magic beans. But up until a few years ago, we were struggling to figure out how we would save for our kids.”

Wow.  I feel so badly for/////what?  They’ve been rich the entire god-damned time?  HOW DARE YOU QUESTION THE OBAMESSIAH OR HIS PRPHET MICHELLE!?!?!!

The Obama family’s income:

$240,505 in 2000
$272,759 in 2001
$259,394 in 2002
$238,327 in 2003
$207,647 in 2004
$1,655,106 in 2005
$983,826 in 2006

A quarter-million dollars is struggling?  Two hundred grand is struggling?  BUY A SMALLER HOUSE, YOU IDIOTS.  Drive a cheaper car.  It’s two hundred fucking thousand dollars, not a WIC check and forty bucks a week from your baby daddy!  Jesus.  With a wife like her, who needs Republicans to point out you aren’t capable of being President?

What kind of idiot would vote for this empty shell of a man?  At least McCain makes it obvious that he’s a slimy liar, and we all know where Hillary sleeps at night.  Right the hell in Lying Harpy Bitchville.  Obama is supposed to be different.  he keeps telling us he is.  And yet he’s all tied up with sleazy slumlords, campaign fundraising issues, Chicago Democrats, racist spiritual mentors and one moron of an angry wife.

If this election - as the Democrats have made it - is about character and judgment, Obama has been found sorely lacking.  We’ve suffered under incompetent leadership for too long.

Don’t just get in line because you like the black man, or he says “hope” a lot, or because you’re a guilty white person.  You don’t have to accept any of these idiots.  You really don’t.

Typical white people

Rachel Lucas, supergenius:

You want equality, then take it, on all levels.

That means when Obama uses the phrase “typical white person”, he deserves to have his figurative ass kicked just like Whitey’s figurative ass would be kicked for saying “typical black person”. It means Reverend Wright is an asshole of a racist just like David Duke. Play fair or don’t play at all.

Blogging was a lesser phenomenon when she quit, and it is better for her return.  Read the whole thing.

Bottom line: Obama intentionally used the phrase, and it is racist...or racially charged, at the very least.  It would never be acceptable for me to use in in reference to him, therefore it should never be acceptable for him to use it in reference to me.  Or anyone else.

Obama will not heal us or unite us or make us better people.  He’s just another kind of “shut up and get in line” politician looking to shame people into letting him have power for a little while.

Barack Obama is just a nicer version of Al Sharpton *UPDATED*

Pundit guy asks:

Why won’t Barack Obama hold Rev. Jeremiah Wright to the same standard he held Don Imus to less than a year ago?

I’ll say it.  What the hell do I care?  No one can fire me or force me to apologize.

BECAUSE HE’S BLACK.

That’s the sum total of the entire reason why Barack Jesus Kennedy Obama is not allowed to be questioned, why he’s not held to any standard of honesty and why he is not expected to tell the god-damned truth.  It’s why he can claim to be about hope and change while maintaining business-as-usual levels of Chicago corruption.  It’s why he gets away with changing the subject completely from Jeremiah Wright’s complete lunatic HATE - yes, hate - of white people and makes it about why YOU are a racist for thinking anything other than “Obama is the new Jesus and Jeremiah Wright is his Father.”

And lastly, it is the sum total of the reason Barack Jesus Kennedy Obama will not hold Wright to the same standard he set for Imus, despite the fact that Wright’s nonsense if approximately three million times more hateful, insane, race-baiting and dangerous; BECAUSE HE IS BLACK.  Which one?  Well, both, actually.  Obama won’t hold Wright accountable because Wright is black, and Obama desperately needs black people to vote for him simply because of color.  By the same logic, Obama won’t hold Wright accountable because Obama is black, and as stated, he needs black people to vote for him simply because of color.  He cannot afford to be seen as throwing Wright under the bus because that would alienate the specific kind of black voters that believe white Americans created AIDS to kill black babies - and they are vocal as hell, even though they are a tiny, tiny number of cranks and kooks.  They can easily shift perception simply by making noise and calling Barack a sell-out, etc.

But...he has to say *something* so as to not alienate the white morons who can see themselves as enlightened enough to vote for a black man, even though voting for him because he is black is racist on its face.  So we got that empty speech that sounds great until you actually look at what is being said.

All that crap about race relations in America was exactly that; crap.  Nice words on paper.  When push comes to shove, Obama’s actual actions support none of what he said in his speech.  He allowed himself and his family to be shaped - spiritually and morally - by a vile, racist old hatemonger with nothing but hate in his heart for white people.  Now Obama has shifted the blame and responsibility for all of this to those who won’t make apologies for the racist old man.  Obama has made it OUR fault for being offended at a hatemongering racist.  How dare you be offended!  You’re white!  Anyone can say anything they want about you, and you do not have a right to ask for accountability or to be offended and question that person’s ability to lead the nation.

You’re white.  Shut up and get in line.

When that 700 Club idiot Pat Robertson and his jerky compatriot Jerry Falwell tried to blame 9/11 on gays and feminists a week or so after it happened, I was livid and disgusted, and rightly so.  Why should I be any less disgusted by Jeremiah Wright?  A person who is not disgusted by the things Jeremiah Wright said isn’t someone I want to know, much less lead my country.  What sort of person isn’t disgusted by Wright?  Who wouldn’t find that crap offensive enough to utterly denounce the man and leave his church?

Barack Obama, that’s who.  God damn America? God damn you, Barack Obama, for making me actually want Hilary Clinton to win anything.

Is anyone else sick of being told to shut up and get in line every time you turn around?  Left, right, black, white, foreign, domestic, government, corporate, it makes no difference.  Everyone is constantly telling us to shut up and get in line.

I’m fed up.  Why aren’t you?

*UPDATE*

Via frequent commenter Rann’s LJ, we get this from Caroline Glick.  While I suggest that you read the whole thing, the last bit is great:

The fact that he didn’t, and the fact that he upheld this man until just a few months ago as his spiritual mentor and still refuses to condemn him and his deeply flawed character tells me everything I need to know about Barack Obama. I think that he is an opportunistic, weak man. I hope and pray that he doesn’t become President.

We are currently on the tail end of a eight year stretch with an opportunistic and weak man as our leader.  We did another eight year stretch before that.  Unfortunately our choices are between one of (currently) three weak and opportunistic people.  Time to make a decision: Lesser of two (or three) evils, or do we draw a line in the sand?

I still don’t know what I am going to do come election day.  I just know I am sick to death of men and women like Obama, Clinton and McCain.

By the way, what Rann wrote in response to the Glick piece is also worth a read.

It sounds like a good speech. I’ll definitely try to sit down and read it today.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll be able to shake the feeling that it’s a bit like the Emperor thoroughly describing his magnificent new clothes.

Bingo.

*UPDATE* 2

Oh look, Andrew Sullivan went all hysterical again.  If you don’t agree that the sun shines out of Obama’s mouth and “The Speech” wasn’t the greatest thing since MLK’s “I have a Dream” speech, then you’re a racist.  That Sully.  So intellectually honest....

Ha!  Hypocrisy, they name is Spitzer (this week)

Couldn’t happen to a bigger dick.

“I have acted in a way that violates my obligation to my family and violates my or any sense of right or wrong,” said Mr. Spitzer, who appeared with his wife Silda at his Manhattan office. “I apologize first and most importantly to my family. I apologize to the public to whom I promised better.”

“I have disappointed and failed to live up to the standard I expected of myself. I must now dedicate some time to regain the trust of my family.”

No, asshole, you broke the law, sexually objectified a woman for money and there was nary a video game or handgun in sight, you sanctimonious prick.  You can’t even be honest when you are admitting to something for which you were caught red...uhh...handed.

Do I think prostitution should be legal?  Damn skippy I do.  Do I want the full might and power of New York State’s laws against prostitution to come to bear against Eliot Spitzer anyway?  You bet your sweet ass I do.  I dislike that hypocritical bag of wind almost as much as I dislike any politician alive.  Until prostitution is made legal, he should do frigging time for what he admitted to doing.  There should be a full investigation, legal action taken to remove him from office, a re-opening of past cases involving the women he paid for and any other high-ranking officials involved and ultimately charges filed against Spitzer.

He’s a dick, and this is gloriously delicious schadenfreude.  Oh the deliciousness, it is so tasty.  Good job electing that dick, New York!  Way to pick ‘em (he says, as a resident of a state that only recently got rid of a horribly corrupt governor).

*UPDATE*

Bye bye!

New York’s randy governor gave a red-faced resignation speech this morning in the wake of revelations that he patronized prostitutes while traveling on official business.

Effective next Monday Gov. Spitzer will cede power to Lt. Gov. David Paterson, making him the state’s first black governor and only the fourth in the nation since Reconstruction.

The Post broke the news of his imminent resignation at 8:38 this morning.

The best part?

“There is no agreement between this office and Governor Eliot Spitzer, relating to his resignation or any other matter,” Michael Garcia, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, said in a statement minutes after Spitzer’s announcement.

He is SO doing time for this.  An example should be made.  Federal PMITA time if we’re all lucky.

Angelina Jolie says stay in Iraq?

Interesting.  Especially this part:

As for the question of whether the surge is working, I can only state what I witnessed: U.N. staff and those of non-governmental organizations seem to feel they have the right set of circumstances to attempt to scale up their programs. And when I asked the troops if they wanted to go home as soon as possible, they said that they miss home but feel invested in Iraq. They have lost many friends and want to be a part of the humanitarian progress they now feel is possible.

It seems to me that now is the moment to address the humanitarian side of this situation. Without the right support, we could miss an opportunity to do some of the good we always stated we intended to do.

She spends a large portion of her time on these kinds of humanitarian projects.  I mean, not just lip service, she actually does things, goes places and gathers information before she speaks.  She just came back from her second trip to Iraq in six months, having met with Petraeus and Maliki, among others.  Her chief concern at this point is the return of Iraqi refugees from other countries.  She’s dead on as far as I can see.

Read the whole thing.  Jolie is not exactly who you’d expect to be advocating this position, and she makes some sound arguments based in both humanitarian terms and in terms of security.  Maybe some of the clowns running under a (D) banner will take note.  For that matter, most of the clowns with (R) after their name could use a reminder as well.

Global Warming strikes again!

Remember all that noise about how the polar ice cap is melting, and how we were all gonna die?  The ice is back.

NEW evidence has cast doubt on claims that the world’s ice-caps are melting, it emerged last night.

Satellite data shows that concerns over the levels of sea ice may have been premature.

It was feared that the polar caps were vanishing because of the effects of global warming.

But figures from the respected US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that almost all the “lost” ice has come back.

Ice levels which had shrunk from 13million sq km in January 2007 to just four million in October, are almost back to their original levels.

Figures show that there is nearly a third more ice in Antarctica than is usual for the time of year.

Oops.

Obama’s tax plan

Yesterday at the gym, one of the TVs was showing one of the talking head “news” channels.  They showed a graphic comparing current tax levels against Obama’s proposed raising of taxes.  I was wearing headphones and standing in the middle of a crowded gym.  I am the guy that tries to never, ever disrupt the place.  I am considerate, even deferential to others because I hate people, and I hate all the things they do, and yet I don’t want them to hate me, so in public I treat people as I wish to be treated.  That is to say, left the hell alone and barely cognizant that anyone else is around.  :)

Anyway...there I was, standing on a treadmill, mouth agape and I could not stop myself.  Out loud, I just said “Holy shit!” I assume it was pretty loud, as I had the music up pretty high.

Here’s the problem: I can’t find an easily-digestible breakdown of what I saw.  It was supposedly from the New York Times, but I can’t find anything there.  Obama’s site buries most of the numbers.  Anyone see this?  Perhaps someone smarter than I can find this info.  What I remember was that he wants to jack the estate tax from zero to 28%, skyrocket payroll taxes to I think 58 or 59% (holy France, Batman!) and raise the income tax, all allegedly on “the rich.” There’s also a “tax cut” for lower middle class and poor folk, but considering that half of them don’t even pay taxes, it’s a lot of posturing for votes, and not really economic assistance of any meaningful variety.

God forbid that any money move anywhere and the federal government not get a cut so it can then use the money to “help” you, eh?

I would vote for the first person to sign a pledge to reduce the federal government by 25% over ten years, with the goal of 50% over 20.  I would vote for John Edwards if he made that pledge.  I’d vote for Michael god-damned Moore if he made that pledge.

Doctor, McCain gives me this sharp pain in my eye

Yeah, pretty much

image

But don’t you dare voice any concerns about the stick-poker.  Why, you’ll be an un-American, racist, troop-hating, commie leftist pinko liberal-loving wimp who hates freedom and wants terrorists to buy the Disney corporation in order to indoctrinate our youth in the ways of Islamic jihad.  And you will confirm that you hate brown people of distantly Spanish descent.

That would be double-plus ungood.  You don’t want to be double-plus ungood, do you?  Just shut up and take the rape of your principles and your country like a good little footsoldier in Reagan’s Army.  The fact that the stick-poker is nothing at all like Reagan and in fact may have no actual principles whatsoever beyond a need to be liked by the media and his opponents is of no concern to you.  Just shut up and get in line.
